Because most trials involve a couple of PhD students drinking coffee, playing minesweeper and deciding whether they should go out and find some volunteers or wait to see if the weather is better tomorrow.
Due to a global pandemic, these trials had a ton of resources thrown at them, which of course reduced the processing time.
There has never been a situation like we're in now, where the urgency for a vaccine has been so extreme (and lucrative).
Just had a quick look btw and apparently BNT162b2 got renamed to Comirnaty the same way the AstraZeneca vaccine was renamed from ChAdOx1 to Vaxzevria.
Both are brand names created by the Brand Institute in Miami.
Comirnaty is supposedly an incorporation of the words Covid 19, mrna, community and immunity. Cute eh?
