I do know that area and am very familiar with the locals. They're some of the weirdest, dumbest, kindest people I've ever been around.
I personally know several people there that thought that the virus was a complete "hoax." Not just being blown out of proportion. Full blown make believe.
Until someone they knew died from it it was still a hoax. Then it was real but blown out of proportion. Then all of them got it and a couple had very bad experiences that are still affecting them.
Now some are scared shitless but a few still aren't sure.
My anecdotal point being that if you don't hit some of the people in that area with a sledgehammer they won't pay attention.

Now, I want to preface anything I say here with "My municipal/provincial rules might be different from yours" Where I am a close contact of someone who's covid positive is required to get tested if they haven't been vaccinated whether or not they have symptoms and are required to quarantine until they get a negative result back. Anyone who lives in the household who was not been vaccinated is also required to quarantine until that person's test comes back as a negative. That being said, I don't know what your wife's workplace is like and whether or not her and a co-worker are considered to be close contacts. If you're vaccinated you don't have to do anything unless you have symptoms.
But I'm just some dude on an MMA forum I'm sure your local public health unit has published guidelines.

I'm never in favor of lying. I can understand a doctor or hospital trying to use fear, or just about anything, if it they genuinely think it would help save people from unnecessary, potentially severe, illness or death. I don't agree with it... But I do understand it.

The numbers the hospitals are reporting are for the purpose of knowing what capacity and resources are being used related to covid. I've had patients that no longer test positive but need just as many resources for care. That's still a covid related patient. They should be included in their numbers. I agree with the doctor.
People have a right to know how bad it really is out there.

I might have said it when I was seeing people dying. Hell, I was saying much scary things the first go around. It much be so much worse on those in healthcare now that know that most of the suffering could easily be prevented.
I remember being told a theory that this Rona was like HIV or Herpes. Once you get it, it never goes away and can 'flare up' or cause problems for the rest of your life. And I warned people about that.
