Did you factor in grading and parent calls? Those things usually happen evenings and weekends, so I'm curious if the 6 months includes all those hours.
They get some prep periods built in, but it's not enough for all that plus writing lesson plans - which you have to do regularly when the curriculum keeps changing, which we've been seeing in recent years.
If you're middle school or higher where the kids change teachers for different classes, a teacher can have 100+ kids to keep up with. If you have to grade essays or reports, that's a lot.
My mom's a middle school teacher in Queens. By the time the summer comes, the long break is good. It has some negative side effects in terms of child care etc., but as a parent I also feel like my kids needs the break.
As someone who is not a teacher, I wish I had that break too.
most salaried professions are based on a 50hr week. It's not uncommon for salaried positions to have burst requirements that last a month of 80hr/week.
it's hard to think of a straight 40/wk 50wk/yr job that makes $70k

I would love a 1 month sabbatical, let alone 3 straight months.
It would be great to "recharge" once a year.
