Don’t know my grasshopper species, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen this one around before. He was big too, over 3 inches long. Cool little fella.

I took my son on his first Cub Scout campout this weekend. It was just a 1 nighter, but it was good. High of mid 70s during the day, upper 40s at night. Perfect for a tent IMO. We were at a State Park with a lake, so it was pretty cool for the kids. We did some hiking and fishing with the kids (fishing was pretty uneventful), among a bunch of other activities like knot tying and camp cooking.

Fires. S’mores. Hot cocoa. Who doesn’t like that?

Saw this asshole on a hiking trail at one of the conservation preserves we work on.

We were on our way to a cave that we needed to enter. Right when we got there there was another rattler about this size that slithered right into the cave. Fuck. So we stood there talking for a few minutes about what to do, and then suddenly two more started moving and scared the shit out of us. We were standing like two feet or less from them and pretty much dropped out gear on them, but we couldn’t see them at all in the tall grass and they didn’t rattle. And after seeing the first two, we were really looking for them and trying to pay attention. Didn’t have my snake chaps on and I think I came really close to stepping on the biggest one. I was definitely within striking range. Fucking assholes. The largest one was about 4.5 feet and he was a fatty. I think these three live in this cave, because we’ve seen three here multiple times now over the past few years. And they’re getting bigger god damn it.

I think I'd call it a day after the other 2 came a-knockin".

That’s exactly what I did, well after the second two lol.

and like a true idiot, complacency led me to not wear my snake gaiters that day. And when we said “fuck this” we had about a mile hike back to the truck through that same terrain and tall grass. And I had them with me, I just chose not to wear them and left them in the truck. Lesson learned - gaiters are to be worn. Now that it’s cooling down, this is prime time of the year for seeing the rattlers. So I knew better, but didn’t make a good decision that day ??‍♂

I took my daughter camping two weeks ago. Couldn’t get a campsite on short notice so we pitched a tent up in the escarpment at my friends house. Went down to -3 Celsius over night. I bought us new mummy bags but in the middle of the night my daughter decided she wanted to climb to mine with me. That meant that the sleeping bag only came up as high as my chest. I had already forgotten to bring myself a pillow so I ended up sleeping on my arm with a wet blanket around my shoulders. My daughter was fine but it turned into an episode of Alone for me.
