"Statistically it's the best solution available to us."
Based on what, exactly? Other than your feelings?
It's the "solution" that the US has chosen, and guess what? Their gun violence is absolutely off the charts compared to
every other developed nation.
Statistically, the best solution is a combination of things, "armed guards everywhere" being nowhere close to the top.
Batman shooter James Holmes was clearly and obviously
deeply mentally ill. He was socially nonfunctional, his thinking was highly disordered, his speech was very disjointed, and nobody who came in contact with him for more than a couple of minutes thought that he was playing with a full deck.
He still had no trouble buying an arsenal of powerful weapons including tear gas, and a full suit of military-grade body armour, though.
Do you think that the better approach would be having a bored minimum wage security guard with a handgun sitting in the lobby waiting for him to show up, or do you think it would be better for severely mentally ill people like him to not buy these?
You think socially isolated mental defectives like Holmes, Adam Lanza, Seung-Hui Cho etc can get these weapons on the black market?
