1. Ukrainians ousted their pro-Russian government in 2014 after a series of protests.

2. The President fled to Russia, Russia annexed Crimea (a Russian-speaking peninsula in southern Ukraine), and Ukrainians elected a pro-western government.

3. Shortly after, Russia unofficially supported rebellions in two Russian-speaking provinces of eastern Ukraine, both of which are still largely self-governing (but neither separatist regime controls the entire province it represents).

4. Three months ago, Russia started positioning troops around Ukraine (it borders it on two sides and put troops in Belarus, which borders Ukraine on a third side).

5. Two days ago, Russia's government formally recognized the independence of said separatist provinces, and Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was going to send in "peacekeepers" to avoid war (which is just Russia's way of saying they're going to invade).

Not 5 or less...

USSR fell. They did not get the Coca-Cola capitalism they wanted. Dem oligarchs. Those in power, probably personally, but also for domestic power grabs push for a reclaiming of the USSR countries to restore Russian pride.
One of those countries is Ukraine. It simultaneously has its own history but also historical "gifting" of it's current lands back and forth between leaders. Between this back and forth as well as Russian ethnicities sympathetic to Russia, Russia lays a historical claim to the as justification for taking back what is rightfully Russian.
Compounding this, GW Bush clearly laid out that the goal is a long-term move for Ukraine to join NATO. This followed every Warsaw pact country running to the west. Once the USSR fell. Russia is trying to hang on to what it can and prevent other countries doing what happened with the Eastern Bloc.

It is then left up to the argument of whether a NATO Ukraine represents a threat to Russia or just a threat to Russia's unchecked expansionism into sovereign countries.

Please define “annexed”. I’ve never completely understood what that meant.

They declared a piece of land as part of their country. Basically, they re-drew international borders. In this case, no one recognizes this land as part of Russia (except, of course, Russia) but Russia maintains de facto control over the territory and the previous Ukrainian government has been pushed out/absorbed.

Pre-2014 (Crimea at bottom):

Post-2014:

Though the annexation was condemned internationally and has not been recognized by any other country, it is worth noting that Crimea is Russian-speaking and nearly all of its inhabitants would rather be part of Russia than of Ukraine.

Sex Chicken @Sex Chicken a few other points:

1. Vladimir Putin considers Ukraine and Russia the same country, regardless of the fact that the rest of the world and, more importantly, most Ukrainians think otherwise.

2. Most Ukrainians want to be closer to the west than to Russia. It was the reason for the 2014 protests that ousted the previous pro-Russian government.

3. Western nations will scream at the top of their lungs and sanction Russia and Russian officials, but they've already said outright that they will not interfere militarily if Russia invades Ukraine. So Putin knows his invasion won't be opposed by outside forces directly and he's willing to deal with the financial consequences caused by sanctions.
