This is a catastrophe for Russia.

They've been dragged into a meat grinder they desperately wanted to avoid. The US is more than happy to turn Ukraine into a graveyard of Russian troops and then use it as a pretext to cripple their economy.

This has nothing to do with western 'weakness' or savvy opportunism by Putin. It's pure desperation by Putin.
