Makes sense. But NATO membership is so far off. Like 10-20 years. Or never. Is NATO in this conversation just a place holder for western interests with NATO being the final piece?
What I mean is that do you think If you took NATO off the table but still tilt Ukraine all the way into western trade, EU economic agreements, you get essentially the same threat to Russia due to the economic and geopolitical pieces?

Also regarding desperation now is it that he doesn't trust circumstances to be better in the future? That he doesn't trust a successor to do it?
Putin is thinking in terms of world history now. He wants to leave a legacy. He has gone nuts basically, completely drunk with power, this is usually what happens after decades of untouched absolute power gets away with doing whatever it wants. He straight up said Ukraine doesn't even exist in his mind as its own nation.

Of course he knows America is weaker than it has ever been right now, he knows he is getting older, and that there has never been a better time to make his moves.

The realization that simply destabilizing Ukraine is not enough to prevent it from joining NATO.

If Russia thought invading Ukraine was no big deal, then it would have done so in 2014. I am certain if they could go back in time, they would.

The idea that conditions for invading Ukraine now, after it has had 8 years to build a western arms-equipped military solely focused on defending itself from Russia, are more favorable for an invasion than then, when it essentially had no organized military, is laughable.

And when you realize that, it should be quickly apparent that all this talk of Putin's 'cunning' or western 'weakness' is complete nonsense.
Had to build ground support for the Independent Republics, that takes time.

Is mutually assured destruction still a deterrent if one side no longer gives a fuck?

Yeah he looks weird as fuck. That to me is super concerning. Like, look at Putin in his 40s. He looks like a regular, hardened Russian guy.

Now he looks like a bloated Botox hollywood weirdo. This guy looks in the mirror at that face daily and thinks it looks good/normal. He is clearly delusional.

Just like most of our leaders.. insane. Personally once I see a politican or leader get deep into weird cosmetic stuff, my thoughts on them really go downhill.. they are clearly mentally ill in a way that is manifesting itself in the physical form. Biden looks like a total fucking weirdo too man, with those fake teeth, fake hair and face lifts.. wtf has this world come to, when these are the people in charge of things. Jesus.
