From that article:

"One of Elon Musk’s top priorities for Twitter following his $44 billion deal to buy the social media company is cracking down on so-called “spam bots.” One problem with that plan: It would cut his own following nearly in half, according to Twitter auditing tool SparkToro."

Problem? Really?

Whether you're a fan of Musk buying Twitter or not, does anyone really think he gives two shits if he loses 40 million fake follower accounts?

The oddest thing about this has been the media's reaction to it.

Fake followers are part of the business model for influencers to get outside money for sponsored posts.
If you own Twitter, you don't want to cut the supposed traffic by half all of a sudden.

I get what you mean, but if it's common knowledge that a high percentage of Twitter accounts are fake then surely the sponsors already take that into account?

Cracking down on the BS accounts may have short term implications for influencers (oh noes!), but long term will surely be beneficial.

This is a really bizarre assertion.

Everyone knows that like half of anyone's followers are bots. It's weird to imply that the people sponsoring posts are the only ones this will be news to.

Elon Musk Will Fund His Twitter Deal With Money From Countries That Suppress Free Speech
On Thursday, an SEC filing revealed new financiers for Musk’s takeover plan, which include Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal and Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund. Both countries impose harsh censorship to quash dissent: A Qatari law states that spreading “false or malicious news” can land you in prison for five years, while in Saudi Arabia, critics of the government have faced arrest and even murder. Saudi Arabia ranks number 166 out of 180 on the World Press Freedom Index, while Qatar ranks number 119, according to Reporters Without Borders.
