It wouldn't have been retarded for the 10s of thousands of civilians and soldiers who had to die, become permanently disabled or traumatized unnecessarily.

Once something is lost, it is lost. The human misery caused by refusing to accept that fact outweighs any minor strategic benefit they gained by tying up some DPR troops and Chechens a bit longer.

Even in military terms, they could have got so many of them out of there. 'But they tied up the Russians' - yeah, they also could have tied up the Russians fighting in a better position where they weren't completely surrounded.

I wasn't going to get involved because I have real life experience of being a colonel in the field but they did the right thing in what they did.
