My post was from an article but I agree with it.

The AR does not fit the definition of the term ‘assault rifle’, even though it was created in response to a request for a semi automatic assault rifle. And was called an assault rifle for years.

But technically it is a rifle and it assaults. So the mother is an assault rifle.

Semantics. It’s nothing but a diversion from the real conversation.

Sad really.
no, the original AR-15 was select-fire. That's why it was an assault rifle.

The designation of AR-15 is marketing. The assault rifle version of the AR-15 was never available to the general public.
EDIT - to be clear, the assault rifle version of the AR-15 was given the M16 designation in the military

The AR-15 available to the public is basically an M1 Garand with a small wiener.

Isn’t any gun, used outside of a controlled environment (is a gun range), an “assault” weapon?
"assault" refers to an infantry tactic of assaulting and flanking a position with infantry. In WW2 it was very common, but they were fighting with the weapons of the last war, WW1 (as per usual) where infantry was lobbing big rounds at each other across trenches.

but the urban warfare of WW2 gave rise the assault rifle.

Most of the push back comes from the term "assault weapon" (and "assault rifle" being used when "assault weapon" was intended). As Filthy mentioned, that term is political. It has been used to refer to different things.

Many people are fed up with the moving of the goal post as a result of this. For instance, the current definition of an assault weapon gets banned, then next week that same term is used to refer to semi-automatic pistols. "Oops, we forgot to ban those assault weapons. Let's modify the bill!" Then it turns out people get really good with pump action long guns and double action revolvers... time to shift the goal post again.

Gun control lobbyist figured out a long time ago that they will never be successful trying to blanket ban guns in the US, so they have been using a death-by-a-thousand-cuts approach for a very long time which contributes to the goal post shifts. Unfortunately for them any time a ban on something gun related is proposed, it typically results in increased sales of said items. Obama was one of the most successful gun salesman of all time.

Sorry I've become numb after all these mass murderers using high capacity clips on their automatic assault rifles, with their barrel shrouds , flash hiders, silencers, and grenade launchers making it so easy to kill people.
It isn't a barrel shroud. It's the thing that goes up.

33 rounds for the factory mags. Aftermarket mags may vary.

I'm more of a "old gun" guy, so I'm not up on the latest. My "newest" handgun design is probably the Beretta 9000S, and that's >20 years old.

it's not like they confessed to their university psychologist that they had a lot of weapons and fantasized about committing mass murder.

just one of the 10s of millions of firearm owners that snapped.

Since people laughed at your post, including myself, you're not alone in numbness ... sadly
