Not a bad salary for only working 9 months out of the year and getting your entire summer off.
You don’t think that teachers should be making more? It’s arguably one of the most important jobs, yet we don’t treat it that way.

There's some great teachers that deserve way more than that.

There's some shitty teachers that don't even deserve what they are making now.

$55k for 9 months equates to a $73k/annual salary.

You could say this for literally every job.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to make a teacher a very respected position that pays well?

I think the equivalent of $73k/yr is pretty damn solid. They get their summers off. 3 months. That needs to be factored into the salary.

I do think they deserve more than they get now. I'm not arguing against the Georgia woman's proposal. I'm agreeing with it.

But with the higher salary comes higher expectations. Time to weed out the bad teachers who do nothing but warm a chair with their fat asses.

Just noticed she said $50k, not $55k so my numbers are a little off.

But $50/k for 9 months comes out to about $32/hr

That's starting. So yeah, that feels fair.

The public doesn't fund most jobs. If I'm paying for something I'd like to see some ROI. If the parents of the kids at the school get to evaluate their teachers then I'm fine paying them whatever the fuck they want. Right now, here at least, it's all determined by union rules which squeezes out young excited teachers in favor of old folks bringing home that cheddar.

In my high school career I had maybe 5 teachers who actually gave a fuck, and 20 who couldn't be bothered to lift their heads to acknowledge you exist.

I learned more from a 10 minute record than I ever learned in school.

The return on investment would be a society with less dummies. If you pay teachers a good salary(sorry but $30-$32 hour doesn’t seem reasonable for how many kids they’re dealing with), you’re going to have more people who want to do the job.

I’m not saying there aren’t bad teachers out there, there obviously is and I had a few of them. But you would also have less shitty teachers if it paid better. The salary is a big factor of people not wanting to die that profession.

that’s a great salary for 1993 but in 2022 pretty low for the education and qualifications required, and the importance of the job.
Fair enough. Work in student loan payback for every year they are employed in the education sector. Say $6000/yr.

do they still have to buy their own supplies?

Show receipts and I'll allow elementary teachers coverage for a base of $1000/school year for grades K through 3.

The formula for grades 4 through 8 is as follows:
(10 - grade) * $100 = X

So for 6th grade:
(10 - 6) * $100 = $400

My reasoning is the younger kids require more stimulation with supplies. That need shrinks as the students age. Exceptions can be made for art teachers

I don't have any reason to believe money is the ultimate motivating factor for people who are going to be good teachers. Based on other professions it's likely to have the opposite effect and bring in people looking for a payday.

I disagree. It’s a huge factor in people not wanting to become teachers right now. Low pay, while dealing with 40+ kids(up to 200 if you’re teaching middle or high school), then having to find a summer job because you don’t make enough teaching kids doesn’t sound appealing.

Anecdotal: I personally know 4 teaches. 1 special needs, 2 grade school, 1 high school. All four spend their summers lounging at the pool.

Anecdotal: I know around a dozen. 3 in my family(one retired). They all range from teaching 3rd grade to high school. The two who don’t work over the summer have spouses that make good money. The rest work at bars/restaurants/Hiking guide.

Hiking guide would be fun.
Like extended excursions into the wilderness?
