Trust me I know, I just personally think a 77% pay increase demand appears excessive.
No doubt. But had they not gone for some outrageous number the counter would not have been 50%, it would have been much lower, probably something like 15%. Its classic negotiations, albeit at an insane opener of 77%. The real number is probably closer to 30-40%, they are being countered at 50%, but because they went to 77% to kick it off, they end up with something in the upper 50's.

The message here is that people need to be paid in accordance with the rise in cost of living. If leadership cannot make their business more efficient, then they need to pay and skip that 7th vacation to the Bahamas for their senior "leaders". The answer is not to stifle wage increases. Employees are not nearly as disposable as the spreadsheets indicate they are.

Im seeing something similar in tech where there are no unions. Job listings that years ago would advertise a starting salary of 120k now show up as 80-90k. Capitalism has been hijacked by a vile MBA style of management that turns people into numbers on an Excel spreadsheet, which eventually tanks the business as a whole. Its stepping over nickels to pick up quarters. The white collars have lost touch across this country with what actually makes their business and municipalities successful and able to grow.

Corporate and government greed has been eroding the workforce for the better part of two decades.

Great timing indeed. Am I crazy for considering that this guy has ulterior motives or another country like Iran or Russia has dirt on him?
Rumor has been that is he connected to the mafia. He has also been raising this flag since last spring at least. This has been on the horizon for months now and no one has been paying attention.

UPS just laid off 6000 employees and are spending billions automating their network over the next 5 years. Outside of the drivers (which they'd get rid of if they could), they've had their fill of the Teamsters.

I assume they're flexing power for their own interests while the rest of us suffer. But that's because I'm on conspiracy overload. sparkuri @sparkuri would know.

One of their reasons for striking is to protect against automation advancement.

Do you know what robots don't do?
Go on strike.

Man - You talk about bad timing for the Dems.

Harris is already polling low with unions. If Biden forces them back to work - that only gets worse. And if Biden doesn't force them back, inflation skyrockets in short order.

S&P 500 already down 1.2% today.

Have you guys seen what the union is asking for? A stop to automation of their jobs and a 77% raise over 6 years. They were offered 50% and refused it. That seems a little excessive to me.

“This is not something that you start and you stop,” he said. “We’re not weak,” he added, pointing to the union’s importance to the nation’s economy

At Port Houston, at least 50 workers started picketing around midnight local time carrying signs saying “No Work Without a Fair Contract.”

The U.S. Maritime Alliance, which represents the ports, said Monday evening that both sides had moved off of their previous wage offers. But no deal was reached.

The union’s opening offer in the talks was for a 77% pay raise over the six-year life of the contract, with President Harold Daggett saying it’s necessary to make up for inflation and years of small raises. ILA members make a base salary of about $81,000 per year, but some can pull in over $200,000 annually with large amounts of overtime.

$200k to work a dock?
And they want 77% more?

So...$354k to work a dock?

GTFO

I'll take "Ways to assure I'm replaced by robots" for $700, Alex.

That's actually Ken now - but you idiots don't know that.

I meant to say you would know the answer to his question. I figure you're immune to the overload.
You're right, I'm....nearly immune.

I have mixed feelings on unions like I do America.
I love America's founding documents & people, & hate what it's become, bankers, TPTB, etc.
Unions were essential at inception & were taken over.

The problem now is, automation, imported cheap labor, mind control, "money" control and all our spying devices have changed everything, & we have a mass of stupid people that ignore the bigger picture & information regarding it.

I'm sure most will agree.
Sadly it appears too late.
This can't not end up badly.

Those devices stunted an entire generation. I saw Zuckerberg talking about smart glasses being as prevalent as smart phones in the next 10 years. They're actively trying to handicap the public.

They want base to go from 39 to 69 an hour, this last 6 year contract that ended was an 11 % increase.

Assange's statement today took me off guard. I thought he must have signed some kind of good boy agreement to get out. Doesn't seem to be the case though.
I didn't see his statement, link?

Speaking of "smart glasses",
This is long, but mandatory.

When I say it will blow you away, it's not an understatement.

$69/hr to work a dock?
LMAO

That's $143,520 straight time.

I'd tell them to get fucked, too.

Or sign it, then work behind the scenes to replace as many workers as possible with robots by the time the next contract rolls around.

I get paid near that to sit in a chair and tell people how to build software that almost no one uses and those that do, it does nothing for the greater good of society.

Some of you old timers have grown out of touch with the job market and the overall cost of living in the modern day it seems like.

I would agree that 143k is high. But for the most part, 100k is the new 40k. Its baseline to support a family to make at least 100k, end of story.
