I also find it hard to believe anyone can be this stupid , what ever about not knowing when the US was founded but surely people aren’t that thick they can’t do basic math or tell how long a quarter of an hour is.

Do you know anyone from GenZ and the education system they grew up in? My daughter did and I fought with the schools non stop because the bullshit they were teaching with common core, the standard response was blame bush for no child left behind.

Her math homework didn't include showing her work, it was writing out a paragraph on what she thinks the answer was. I wish was I was joking.

They didn't even teach how to read a clock, said there was no reason, everything is a digital display these days.

A friend of mine's daughter graduated at the top of her class and she had to take remedial classes at the local community college after the placement test scoring. He was pissed and went after the school board about it.

I 100 percent believe the video displayed is accurate for a majority of that generation.

That is very sad.

It's things like this that every once in a while make me question if the depopulatio n side may be on to something.... it's frustrating that we have to share oxygen with those morons.

Micro-Wiggy (my 7-year old granddaughter) is in the middle of this shit. I'm the one that gets her off the school bus & does her homework with her most days. I swear to all that is holy, I will have to sometimes stare at the example problem on her math homework for several minutes to try & figure out WTF they're trying to do. On multiple instances I've literally had NO CLUE what the "instructions" (<==term used *very* loosely) were trying to say and had to ask *her* if *she* understood.

An example of a problem she was working on a couple weeks ago:

9 + 7 = ?

First, break 9 down into two numbers that add up to it.

e.g. - 5 & 4

Now add the first of those two to the second number in the original problem:

5 + 7 = 12

Now add the second number of the two you broke the first number down into:

12 + 4 = 16

16 = your answer

So instead of:

9 + 7 = 16

You have:

9 + 7 = ?
5 + 4 = 9
5 + 7 = 12
12 + 4 = 16
9 + 7 = 16

WHAT IN THE HOLY MOTHER OF FUCK!?!

We homeschool and are following more of the Singapore method of learning math. Seems to work ok. She took an assessment this year and tested one grade ahead for her age. She tested five grades ahead on reading and writing.

Everything is done on computers and it's so easy to cheat. I was able to cheat but out of my group of homes was the only juan smart enough to use juan. I showed my friends hard-core porn and I was their hero. You'd think I was like 60 years old or something but I just hung out with lots of red/brown necks.

I know a "kid" that started her doctorate this year, full ride. She completely admits she doesn't write papers, just edits them enough to make it through the filters her professors used.
Like that was a skill.

I've known this kid since she was 13.
Very bright.
This is how modern education taught her. She honestly doesn't understand how weird it is. It's all she's known.

I didn't know what to say when it came out, me and the other olds just stared at each other. She said it so casually it didn't even make sense.

When my daughter was in 3rd grade she asked me to help her with math homework.

So we sat down at the kitchen table and I'm reading the paragraph on the paper. It was something like there are 32 animals in the cafeteria, there are 3 times as many elephants as there are giraffes, 1/2 as many elephants as there are monkeys, etc.

I thought to myself, wow, they are teaching my 8 year old basic algebra. So I wrote out a quick formula, showed her my work while explaining it. She said dad I have never seen that. I was shocked, I asked her well how do they want you to answer it.

She told me she was supposed to draw a picture showing the correct amount of animals sitting at the tables in the cafeteria.

Math answer was drawing a picture. I wish I was making that up.

We had a parent/teacher meeting shortly after that.

Yeah, I remember my brother showing me how to do a math problem. The teacher said "did someone older do this for you?" I said No, but they showed me a faster way!

I got full credit since I proved to her I knew the old school way but was told never to use it again.

hahaha I feel your pain.

Micro-Wiggy has what they call "specials" every day. Each week, her class goes to one day each of library, music, art, PE, & science. I'll ask her which she had that day and what they did, and the answers half the time are mind-bottling.

They have:

--sung songs in science
--did math in library
--played games in art
--drew pictures in PE

And more. It's not always like this, but holy shit, the fact that this stuff happens at all is nuts.

Well if it gives you any hope when my daughter started middle school we had new student night where we got to meet the teachers. I beelined it to the math teacher and asked him what he was going to teach my daughter. He looked confused and said math. I explained the math my daughter was taught in elementary school and he laughed, he said, yeah, I don't teach that shit, I teach actual math. And he did.

So sort of interesting. To reference home schooling again. This is sort of how we do it. Half the point is to completely break the old mold, the way we were brought up in school. Kids like to play they dont like to sit and grind out 8 hours of work. The DOE model is to raise drones and so K-12 reflects that.

My wife and daughter basically just have fun every day. Many lessons they make into songs. For example they use the rhythm of the Frozen movie song to learn about the circulatory system. Math is presented in funny word problems. They go to the library 3-4 times per week and check out 20+ books. Currently my little one is really into frontier days type shit, so she is reading probably 50 books a week on the topic. They are fictional books of course, she is only 3rd grade. She spends 1-2 hours every night zipping around the neighborhood on one of those razor scooters. They put on music and create plays and dance. She has this hawaiian dress and pretends she is Moana and they took all this construction paper and made props out of toys and household items and made the ocean, sand, and forest on the kitchen floor and pretend they are stuck out at sea. They cook and clean. They make kinetic sand and goop, playdoh, and silly putty.

Most days all I can hear up there is them laughing.

Half the reason I was such a little shithead when I was a kid was I was smart and I was bored. I could do the work faster than most kids and then would just sit there. Over years it made me so bored and lucky me, I also started to fall in with the wrong crowd because the troublemaking they were doing was exciting.

The DOEs program was to force kids to not be kids but to sit there and do 1000 simple math problems, read irrelevant books, learn science in the most boring of ways "for safety", etc. Kids should be having fun and when they are having fun their brains are more open to picking up new information and retaining it.

So I guess my point is maybe its not all bad, perhaps this shows that your school is starting to think out of the box at least in some ways.
