I put the blame on the judge as well, a judge can over ride the DA's recommendation. I've seen it often.

Out of boredom, I did a bit of Google-fu.
Wikipedia tells me the 3rd gen Chevy Nova was made from 1968-1974.
Let's say that car is a few years old in the pic, perhaps it's 1975? That would seem to fit with the clothes she's wearing.
An online inflation calculator tells me that 49 cents in 1975 is worth $2.88 in today's money.
Out of interest, how much does a gallon cost in the USA right now?
Same...and a few years later there was a line around that station and limits on how much you could buy and which days.
