Some dipshit drilled a hole through my gas tank and stole all of my gas. It was pretty much full, just under $100 worth of gas, and I need to fix the tank and the fuel gauge isn't working because it still says it is full.

I park in a "secured" underground parking garage, so they either had access, knew the building well enough to know where to go since there is a way to get in, or someone let them in via tailgating or otherwise.

I have a 21-ish gallon tank. They left behind their own 5 gallon onboard tank which the fire department said was full meaning they had a way to take the other 16-ish gallons with them. There is a roughly 3/8 inch hole in my tank, so they had a drill too.

I haven't driven my truck for two weeks or so. I'm not entirely sure exactly when it happened, but it made the parking garage reek of gas, so must have been tonight. I guess someone reported the smell to the property management company who contacted me as well as the fire department after I let them know that I didn't put a gas tank under my truck. They also filed a police report. The cops don't show up for property damage and/or theft unless the crime is on progress. The report was filed online, so there isn't a report number assigned to it for around 24 hours which I need to file a victim's report.

I already filed a report with my insurance company, but it looks like I am at least going to be out my deductible for the stolen gas and damaged tank / fuel gauge. I didn't notice any other damage.

I called the fire department. From the way he talked about it, it sounded like the guy I spoke with was one of the fireman that responded to the call. I don't think there was really any gas on the floor to clean up since I didn't notice anything there, but they took the gas can that was under my truck so the smell would go away. He also mentioned that this has been happening a lot to the model of truck I have. The only reason I can think of is simply because there is enough room to get under the truck and to the gas tank, but that is almost any truck. So, I dunno. I called the fire station the property management guy told me responded, so I guess the other incidents the fireman mentioned where in the same area I live in.

There are cameras at the entrances of the building as well as throughout the parking garage and first floor lobby, but I don't know if they even work. I'll have to talk to property management again tomorrow. I know they have a log of which key fob gets used and when, but I don't know if one was used in this case and if there isn't video, I don't know how they could tell exactly what time to look for who accessed the parking garage. My guess is the thieves drove in given they are able to get away with roughly 16 gallons of gas. Most people that commit these types of crimes do so using a stolen vehicle, so I'm not sure a plate number would even help.

Anyway, rant over.

16 gallons of gas?

So, they got away with like $50-60 ish in gas?

Seems like a lot of trouble and risk to go to for that. Especially if they leave a tank with 5 gallons behind.

Talk about small time crooks.

Well, I no longer have the gas they left either. The fire department has it, so I'm out 21 gallons which is just under $100 at today's price here, but yeah. They probably stole the gas tank they left behind at some point.

That's how much you lost, as well as repair costs and inconvenience, but I was referring to the thieves.

For all the trouble they went to, with the risk of being caught - especially considering that the drill must have been noisy, the gas must have taken time to drain and the smell would fill the parking garage quickly making it more likely that they are discovered - they could have made several times that in 2 minutes flat by using a reciprocating saw to steal your catalytic converter.

These aren't exactly rocket surgeons we're talking about here.

I imagine that they were disturbed in the act, possibly by the person that reported the strong smell of gas, as they left nearly 25% of their "haul" behind.
