(CNN)Philadelphia's mayor on Tuesday vowed to find the "coward" who left a pig's head at the door of a Philadelphia mosque.

The head was found outside the Al-Aqsa Islamic Society early Monday morning.

"We all know of the terrible, thoughtless, ignorant act that someone perpetrated in this city yesterday," said Mayor Michael Nutter. "We will, of course, at some point in time find the coward."

Pork and pork byproducts are haram, or forbidden, in Islam.

Surveillance video shows a red truck driving by the mosque. On its second pass, someone tosses something from the vehicle and what appears to be the pig's head rolls near the mosque's door.

The driver and the passenger of the vehicle are not visible.

"It is too early in the investigation to determine if it is a hate crime, but I anticipate that will be the direction the investigation will go," Philadelphia police officer Leeloni Palmiero told CNN.

Police are investigating whether the incident has any connection to a voicemail the mosque received last month, in which a male voice said: "Are you happy about what happened in France?" "God is a pig!" and "God is Pork!"

The FBI has launched a parallel investigation.

At his Tuesday news conference, Nutter blasted Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who recently proposed a ban on Muslims entering the United States.

"What we're finding is that no group is safe from his ignorance and rhetoric," said the mayor, who later called Trump an "asshole."

Ibrahim Hooper, national communications director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, told CNN that his group has seen a spike in violence and anti-Muslim sentiment since last month's terror attacks in Paris.

"The anti-Muslim atmosphere we've been seeing in recent weeks is, in many ways, worse than it was after the 9/11 attacks," he said. "After 9/11, the anti-Muslim rhetoric was on the fringes. ... Now it's at the mainstream."

In his experience, mosque spokesman Marwan Kreidie told CNN that the incident involving the pig's head is unusual. He described the neighborhood where the Al-Aqsa Islamic Society is located as tolerant and diverse.

When asked about Trump, he said that "words have consequences," but stressed that the problem is not contained to one person.

"Unfortunately, there appears to be an audience for this," said Kreidie.

Every time I get drunk with a Muslim I make it my sole mission to trick them into eating bacon without even realizing it. Not because I hate Muslims but because a Muslim who's drinking shouldn't be such a little bitch about it.

Ted Nugent just brought to light one important detail that I guarantee none of these Islamic terrorists have even considered. In the Islamic religion, pork and pork products are forbidden because the pig is considered an impure animal. In a Facebook post Ted writes…

Percy the pig makes for an extremely interesting read. I never knew pigs were in most products!!
Every Muslim who has ever handled TNT, Nitro, Bullets, High Explosive Bombs, Rocket Launchers or been treated for cuts injury requiring stitches, or taken antibiotics, or Vitamin Capsules, has been contaminated with Pig Products.
The ironical part is that when a Suicide Bomber blows himself up his body parts are impregnated with Gelatine and Glycerine from the explosive. Both Gelatine and Glycerine are manufactured from Pigs worldwide.. Ergo, they will never be accepted by Allah.
Some makers of cigarettes use haemoglobin from pig’s blood in their filters. Apparently this element works as a sort of ‘artificial lung’ in the cigarette so, they claim, ‘harmful reactions take place before the chemicals reach the user’, (enter the Pig.)
Pig bone gelatine is used to help transport gunpowder or cordite into the bullet. Insulin, the blood-thinning drug heparin and pig heart valves all vital. The complex workings of the global food and processing industry have ensured that it is impossible to avoid pig altogether.
There is no legal obligation for manufacturers to specify whether the gelatine they use is from a pig or another animal. When it is specified, it is often confusingly referred to as Suilline gelatine.
So to all prospective Suicide Bombers, ISIS and innocent, good Muslims, I say, “Have a Nice Day” from “Percy” the wonderful Pig.

Looks like these Muslim terrorists are in for a rude awakening when they reach the afterlife! Thanks for the good news Ted!!

That would be the case if they left a pigs head near a football pitch. Near a mosque is a different story. Something about the right of free worship
That doesn't sound very specific. I'd fancy my chances at beating those charges with the free lawyer provided by the state.

I would imagine they will throw every charge they can imagine to see what sticks: hate crime, criminal harassment etc

Well I dont know much about the local laws there, but here in convict land

Section 116 of the Constitution of Australia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theyd be fucked ibefore it even got to a constitutional testing.

Of what benefit was their act anyway mate? throwing a pig head near a mosque has rather predictable results and not ones that are of any benefit to anyone I can think of. Testing free speech maybe? Im not sure if thats what their "founding fathers" had in mind

"Hate crime" isn't a crime. Criminal harassment will be hard to prove.

I support freedom of religion. I do not support special treatment for religion. If you can't find a job that allows you time off to pray 5 times a day, too bad. If you want to discriminate against gays or other protected classes, too bad. If you want other people to treat a dead animal as a subject of your religion, too bad.

If my religion says no one can walk within 100 metres of me, I don't get to enforce that.

That link absolutely does not condemn leaving a pig's head near a mosque.

The act wasn't of any benefit. The guy was being an asshole. That's not a crime

Leigh @Leigh we need to look at the bench mark for reasonableness at law
I don't believe that's a factor. You do not get special treatment based on religion.
Religion is a protected class, like race, gender and sexuality. You cannot be discriminated against in the work place and assaulting someone based on their religion is a hate crime. It does not offer you special protection.

That pigs head isn't preventing anyone from worshipping.

None of that should be illegal either.

Here's another Wikipedia link on Australia's religious freedom:

Hate speech laws in Australia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From reading this, preaching that someone who doesn't follow your religion deserves to be tortured for ever (eg go to hell) is illegal. How often is that enforced?

I'm not sure its ever been tested. Youve probably done your homework, Im ready to eat crow.
I haven't, I've just held this opinion since police in the UK started prosecuting islamophobic tweets. If preaching hatred based on religion is illegal, most churches, mosques, synagogues etc should be shut down.
