You can absolutely be charged with a hate crime in the U.S."Hate crime" isn't a crime. Criminal harassment will be hard to prove.
I support freedom of religion. I do not support special treatment for religion. If you can't find a job that allows you time off to pray 5 times a day, too bad. If you want to discriminate against gays or other protected classes, too bad. If you want other people to treat a dead animal as a subject of your religion, too bad.
If my religion says no one can walk within 100 metres of me, I don't get to enforce that.

Although state laws vary, current statutes permit federal prosecution of hate crimes committed on the basis of a person's protected characteristics of race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ)/FBI, as well as campus security authorities, are required to collect and publish hate crime statistics.
