FAFO. The US doesn't need trade with Canada. We only export roughly 1.2% of our goods to Canada. Canada on the other hand exports roughly 40% of their goods to the US. He didn't have a leg to stand on.
A couple things, 1) No one needs trade with anyone. 2) When you're talking about tariffs import is what matters, not export. 3) You're doing a victory lap for something that was announced by the government in December.

On point 1 you're wrong. Canada absolutely needs trade. Point number 2 is incorrect, however I think you understand that you're rewording what I said. US allows 40% of Canada's export into the country. Therefore 40% of Canada's goods would be subject to tariffs. US on the other hand...1.2% of goods exported. Point number 3, the victory lap is because Trudeau FAFO, then only switched course mere hours ago after attempting to flex and threatening his own tariffs on US goods.
Keep in mind none of this needed to happen to begin with. Trump is simply asking Canada and Mexico to be good neighbors.

Well, no. Canada wants trade. Want and need aren't the same.

Remembering that Americans pay tariffs on Canadian exports...

Maybe protecting the bottom line of major corporations is a concern for you. I don't really care, they should be able to pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

Not really, no. Here's the same announcement on the government website from December:

I agree.

Trump is simply asking Canada and Mexico to be good neighbors.
It isn't Canada or Mexico's fault that America can't manage their borders to protect their citizens. I thought that was one of the big complaints about Biden, but it looks like Trump can't handle the job either.
