Not looking for a bad ass who needs to be muzzled in public that magically transforms into a lovable Fido for the kids when they are around but just a good breed (Hopefully rescue) that has a natural protective instinct but also good with kids.

Also when I researched this in the past many trainers were saying that you have to train a dog to actually bite an intruder, what in the fucking fuck? is this true? Ive been bitten by mutts more times than I care to remember and the dickheads didnt seem trained to me.

Im going to or at least leaning towards a female at this stage as Ive had good experiences with them growing up.

It is true that use because a breed us a reputation as a guard dog does not mean that they will necessarily bite an intruder.
I like German Shepherds, they have been a good family dog, and they help deter the casual burglar. If someone is really intent on robbing your house, a dog is not going to stop them.

Yeah with liability laws here the way they are id rather they didnt bite them but put themselves in between the kids and the scum bag and let me know loud and clear so "Daddy Man" (as they call me) comes to the rescue.

When I was kid our dog walked me to and from school, dude had a 6th sense about people too and would be cool with anyone who walked by but if a weirdo was walking past he would push me hard off the side walk and try and wedge me against someone's front fence.

I had one he was awesome, dafarq he could beat a lion tho haha he was a pussy cause my then GF babied him.

Current wife might eat my dog so no chance of that happening again.

Staffordshire bull terrier. P4p #1. Real smart real athletic real friendly. He, will lick random strangers but they, can be trained to guard.

They have a high idiot owner rate as well. I'd have him around kids no problem, he's boisterous so he would have to be watched he'd knock small kids down just bumping off them walking by. He's really friendly though, he'll play with anyone. He's a bit like a really friendly Taz.

From personal experience, a Keeshond might be what you are looking for.
They are medium sized dogs but have a natural protective instinct. I had a few as a kid and no one would enter our yard with them. A Doberman Pinscher once entered our yard and the male ripped the doberman throat out. They are also great with kids. I was never bitten.

Cane Corso bro! Cane Corso.

Don't know how easy to find in Australia they are. Here's mine, with the nephew and lounging last summer. She's a bit small (only 95 pounds) but she gets it done. So protective and loyal, but with a super friendly and affectionate disposition. My dog is so protective she protects all the little dogs from the bullies at the dog park, lmao.

The Cane Corso is a descendant of the canis pugnax,[3] dogs used by the Romans in warfare. Its name derives from cane da corso, an old term for those catch dogs used in rural activities (for cattle and swine; boar hunting, and bear fighting) as distinct from cane da camera which indicates the catch dog kept as a bodyguard. Cane Corso were also used to guard property, livestock, and families, and some continue to be used for this purpose today. Historically it has also been used by night watchmen, keepers, and, in the past, by carters and drovers. In the more distant past this breed was common all over Italy, as an ample iconography and historiography testify.

An English Staffordshire terrier would be ok with kids but don't get an American one, they have worse bloodlines generally.

Also Cane Corso's are more teh cool.
