Let's say you had to join up and were given the choice. I'm not including the Coast Guard because I think they're Dept of Homeland Security now.

Myself, I'm picking the Navy. Main reason is because we got paid the most and didn't have to actually go on land and do any shooting and eat MRE's.

Much easier to lob a missile from 500 NM's away and then go back and finish your movie.

Air Force. I was in the marines and it seems like much harder work. On NYE we'd crash the navy boys party, fuckers always had drinks and girls got conscripted to them. We didn't get girls :(

IMO, and this is just what I've heard, could be rumors.

Air Force is the laziest. Bunch of guys on the fat boy mandatory PT program in there.

Army, they'll let you in with an asvap score of 15. If you graduated 3rd grade you'll excell there.

Same here in the U.S.

Navy dudes get all the chicks. Army and Marines are left with the scraps

When I was a civilian, I wanted to be a Marine. When I was a Grunt, I wanted to be a POG. When I got out, times were hard so I try to go back in and wanted to join the AirForce, and they denied me. They told me "no marines..."

No shit? When was this? I do recall at the time I got out of the Navy (2008) the Air Force and Navy were both down sizing drastically.

I reckon it's same same all over. For the marines you've gotta have brains and brawn. Sweden tests us on a score from 1-9 on Strength, endurance, intelligence, hearing and eye-sight. Got a 9 on all except eyesight because my left eye is fucked or I'd have gone into Kustjagarna which is our version of Navy Seals. Instead I got selected for medic in the marines. After my 12 months of training they sent me to Liberia for peace-keeping ops and then I went into MUST which is our military intelligence service. And now I'm teaching English and slanging weed in Thailand, couldn't have gone btter.

Funny how things work out. I used to be deep underwater in a submarine doing all sorts of crazy shit.

Now I work at a grocery store making less money but I get to go home every night.

And going home every night isn't fucking bad eh? I am still a bit of dysfunctional fuck in that I don't stop drinking and fighting and just settle down, but combat roles are a bit far out.

Going home every night is the best. I turned down 45k and a pretty much guaranteed advancement to E-6 just to get that feeling. Plus, when my 8 hours are up, I'm outta there.

Used to be on 3 section duty while in port which meant every 3rd night you had to spend onboard the sub and that's when you WERENT at sea.

Add those days up with the time spent at sea and you're gone for 9 months out of the year.

Yeah, fuck that. One of the things a lot of people don't get is the constant stress of being active duty. It's not like you go and hit the gym hard for 3 hours and then go home.

If I had to do it again I'd make the same choice and go Marines.
If I had to do it again I wouldn't make the same choice and would choose the royal air force. I worked alongside them and their tech school was a lot better than the royal navy and they acquired skills I'd have to get promotion before I'd be trained in right off the bat.

Things have worked out good for me but I'd be in a better position applying for jobs if I had made a different choice.

Or maybe they wouldnt, maybe I'd have liked it better than the navy and my dumb ass would still be serving

Is my understanding of marines vs army correct? Basically marines go in take over an area, secure it then the army comes in and holds it while the marines continue on with the army supporting them?

That's the doctrine of Sweden. The marines are supposed to be the first in to seize a territory, not supposed to do much else really. I'll defer to the yanks with combat experience on this one though. All I did was "peace keeping" which meant to show sufficient force to sit the local warlords down for the time being.

I was in neither but that's my understanding of it.

If you go back to WW2 in the Pacific theater, the Marines would storm the beaches and do the fighting and then the Army would come by a month later for occupational duty.

Navy because of the Navy Seals.

If I do something I want to be the best, and the Navy Seals are the best SF unit ever.

I wouldn't want to settle for some half ass Army Ranger or Marine SF title.

I'd rather have an Army Ranger backing me than a Seal, just saying.

Training is just prep.

Individuals are badass.

Just some army sergeant...

Daniel Inouye - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On April 21, 1945, Inouye was grievously wounded while leading an assault on a heavily-defended ridge near San Terenzo in Tuscany, Italy, called the Colle Musatello. The ridge served as a strongpoint of the German fortifications known as the Gothic Line, the last and most unyielding line of German defensive works in Italy. As he led his platoon in a flanking maneuver, three German machine guns opened fire from covered positions 40 yards away, pinning his men to the ground. Inouye stood up to attack and was shot in the stomach. Ignoring his wound, he proceeded to attack and destroy the first machine gun nest with hand grenades and his Thompson submachine gun. When informed of the severity of his wound, he refused treatment and rallied his men for an attack on the second machine gun position, which he successfully destroyed before collapsing from blood loss.[11]

As his squad distracted the third machine gunner, Inouye crawled toward the final bunker, coming within 10 yards. As he raised himself up and cocked his arm to throw his last grenade, a German soldier inside the bunker fired a rifle grenade, which struck his right elbow, nearly severing most of his arm and leaving his primed grenade reflexively "clenched in a fist that suddenly didn't belong to me anymore".[12]Inouye's horrified soldiers moved to his aid, but he shouted for them to keep back out of fear his severed fist would involuntarily relax and drop the grenade. While the German inside the bunker reloaded his rifle, Inouye pried the live grenade from his useless right hand and transferred it to his left. As the enemy soldier aimed his rifle at him, Inouye tossed the grenade into the bunker and destroyed it. He stumbled to his feet and continued forward, silencing the last German resistance with a one-handed burst from his Thompson before being wounded in the leg and tumbling unconscious to the bottom of the ridge. He awoke to see the worried men of his platoon hovering over him. His only comment before being carried away was to order them back to their positions, saying "nobody called off the war!"

No way. SEALS are the most thoroughly trained operators in the world. Actually got to spend some time with those guys on deployment when their SDV was attached to our sub.

Ben soloman...just some army dentist

Captain Ben L. Salomon was serving at Saipan, in the Marianas Islands on July 7, 1944, as the Surgeon for the 2nd Battalion, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. The Regiment’s 1st and 2d Battalions were attacked by an overwhelming force estimated between 3,000 and 5,000 Japanese soldiers. It was one of the largest attacks attempted in thePacific Theater during World War II. Although both units fought furiously, the enemy soon penetrated the Battalions’ combined perimeter and inflicted overwhelming casualties. In the first minutes of the attack, approximately 30 wounded soldiers walked, crawled, or were carried into Captain Salomon’s aid station, and the small tent soon filled with wounded men. As the perimeter began to be overrun, it became increasingly difficult for Captain Salomon to work on the wounded. He then saw a Japanese soldierbayoneting one of the wounded soldiers lying near the tent. Firing from a squatting position, Captain Salomon quickly killed the enemy soldier. Then, as he turned his attention back to the wounded, two more Japanese soldiers appeared in the front entrance of the tent. As these enemy soldiers were killed, four more crawled under the tent walls. Rushing them, Captain Salomon kicked the knife out of the hand of one, shot another, and bayoneted a third. Captain Salomon butted the fourth enemy soldier in the stomach and a wounded comrade then shot and killed the enemy soldier. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Captain Salomon ordered the wounded to make their way as best they could back to the regimental aid station, while he attempted to hold off the enemy until they were clear. Captain Salomon then grabbed a rifle from one of the wounded and rushed out of the tent. After four men were killed while manning a machine gun, Captain Salomon took control of it. When his body was later found, 98 dead enemy soldiers were piled in front of his position.
