Sad days up here in Canada. the Dollar is sinking like crazy (currently at 68 cents to the USD, the lowest its been in 13 years, the lowest ever was 62 cents) and is predicted to get to around 55 cents by this time next year.

Canada's dollar is tied to oil 100%, its our biggest commodity by far, and unfortunately we are not a big player in that game. With oil so low Canada is projected to see no "recovery" until 2019 AT LEAST. thats 3 fucking years of people losing their jobs and livelihood.

what is there to do to save us from being completely fucked?

I honestly believe that if we werent neighbors with the USA we would be english-speaking-Russia. Canada's problems are huge. we are small in populace and huge in area, so its not easy or cost defective to do many things pertaining to industry or resources and our weather sucks shit.

this isnt a liberal or conservative problem, its a Canada problem.

discuss.

Bro, there's much more to our economy than oil. We export many other resources and a low dollar helps that.

Hell, there's more to our economy than resources in general anyway.

If this country sucks until 2019, it will be because we elected a 43 year old boy as PM.

please, show me where it has helped. because all of our industries have been going down for over a decade. oil has held up our economy for that time.

yes, but nothing to replace the gigantic gap that oil has left. how can you even say otherwise?

this statement shows your intelligence level is very low.

Pretty much agree with WEWEREONABREAK @WEWEREONABREAK the exports decline has pretty much match the oil incline. Companies which previously purchased Canadian made goods started looking elsewhere because of the increased costs. Lots of jobs left the country due to increased costs of labour.

I don't think Justin has a sweet fucking clue what to do about running a country. Which is fine because hopefully he has lots of staff to make his speeches for him and advise of policy. I don't see how anyone can argue that he's more than a head of hair and a great last name. I just hope he hasn't inspired a "anyone can be PM" mentality. I heard that Kevin O'Leary wants to run for the conservative leadership...please god no...

Canada has a lot of really great university and colleges so I as long as we can keep the skilled work force at home I'm not overly worried about the price of the dollar.

It's gonna affect us, too. For example my state (Florida) relies on Quebecois and other Canadian tourist dollars in the winter months.

Yep. Lots of people used that margin. Knew a guy whose entire company went under because of the CAD-USD parity.

I don't think anything is really all good or all bad. Devalued currency will actually help us in other ways.

And tbh dude, back when the dollar was low, was our country shit or something? No. It was first world then with a great quality of life and it will be now.

Well at least you have healthcare free. Untill the tax dollars quit coming in and they can no longer pay for it.

The low dollar is already negatively impacting consumers and our economy is indeed energy dependent. For Canada to be functioning smoothly economically it needs a strong energy economy in the West, solid banking and financials in the largest markets (Toronto) and a healthy manufacturing industry in Central Canada. Right now we have decent banking and financials, at least.

All of our other industries are ancillary to those three.

Thats why every other country sends their soldiers and sailors to train with us. Remember your queen has to ask us for permission before taking military action against anyone.
