With Conor McGregor now officially booked to rematch Nate Diaz at UFC 200, the two guys who’ve been campaigning to take on the current featherweight champion at least know their fates, too.

During Wednesday’s broadcast of UFC Tonight it was announced that Frankie Edgar andJose Aldo -- the top two challengers to McGregor’s 145-pound title -- will meet on the same July 9 card for the interim featherweight belt.

It was reported that the winner would "at some point down the road" get the chance to unify the belt against McGregor, who will face Diaz for the second time at 170 pounds.

posted in a dif thread but edgar needs to read this..

when aldo goes to leg kick your leg, lift it (common defense to leg kick to reduce damage) and then as it connects pivot your other foot and spin around using the momentum from his leg kick hitting your leg and *WHOPPPP* land that head kick KO to the face

stripping Conor would've been way better.

Edgar has looked better lately, so going with Edgar to get the W.

It'll be interim depending on which fighter wins. If it's Aldo then Conor will come back down and fight him again. If Edgar wins then I fully expect Conor to vacate and stay at 155 and take random big fights until Ireland quits paying to see him fight.

This is bull shit. The only reason Dana gave for allowing Conor to fight in the 45 and55 divisions was that he would be active in both.. But now.. He's lined up for another fight at neither of those weight classes. They pander to MC Gregor too much. Making an interm belt just goes against this whole thing being a sport. I know it's entertainment and prize fighting after all but bending there own rules to cash in hurts stars in the long run. Look at Ronda or sage/paige

I dont think stripping was a good idea. If they stripped him, who knows when he goes back down to 145, if ever. Conor owes 145 at least a few more fights. Those guys train too hard to fight for a fake belt.

If Conor wins the rematch, he'll vacate the title. If he loses, then he'll most likely attempt to cut back down to 145 to fight the winner of Aldo vs Edgar. Follow the money for the explanation that makes the most sense.

Aldo will win this again. I think we're counting him out too soon. Unless he drops his urine again or any other occurance may hinder his performance... :)

What a strange state the FW division has become.

In 2011 Jose defends the FW title for the fIrst time in the UFC. Over the next 4 years or so he defends it against great fighters like Florian, Mendes and Edgar and yet the division doesn't really gain the interest one would expect even though Jose is considered one of the best ever.

Along comes Conor who breaths some life into the division with his fan friendly style and talk. He gets a title shot from beating #9 Siver, wins the interim belt by beating short notice Mendes then KOs the real champ in seconds.

Then he gets to go up to 155 for another title shot before ever defending his FW strap leaving the top contenders waiting even though we were told this wouldnt happen. This fight of course ends up being another short notice fight which he loses pretty badly and gives hope to seeing him go back to 145 and fight there but.....

So now he gets to rematch a guy who he just lost to in very convincing fashion months later while the two top contenders in the division he holds a belt in duke it out for an interim belt? Why?

What the fucks going on here? This feels like they have handed Conor one of those choose your own adventure books I read in elementary school, shits ridiculous.

Feels like they are hoping Aldo takes out Edgar and then Conor can come back to 145 once he's on salads again

stripping is the most logical idea after failing to win in a higher weight class vs a legit LW in Nate. He should've been forced to defend he's FW belt. Not another fight for a non title fight. Now the FW belt won't be defended probably for another 3-8 months. It's pathetic how people can make excuses for Conor and the severe nut hugging by the Zuffa is out of control.

"at some point down the road"

sounds ominous. no way should Aldo or Edgar of agreed to it being for the interim. The UFC are still making fools of these guys, will thye never learn? Conor is laughing his ass off. Gets to mess with Aldo fight week without having to face him in the cage.

It's pathetic.
