Not sure how long this link will last the last one from this channel got deleted but I digress. This next cartoon wasn't as popular as Thundercats or He-Man but was one of the better toons during the 80's . Centurions was about three blokes who had battle suits that had attachments that represented water, Earth and air much like the military. There were cool toys although a weird size they were well made and snapped together so you could make up new combos.

Do you get this one growing up?

King Arthur and the Knights of Justice. The story of King Arthur and his Knights trapped by an evil enchantress. The wizard Merlin unable to help recruits a football team as temporary replacements of the round table to rescue the real King and his Knights.

It was co-created and produced by Avi Arad, who people may or may not know is a pretty big deal at Marvel.

I did! I still have the King Arthur action figure somewhere, it was later on than Masters and Thundercats and not as popular but had some cool stories, definitely tried to capture the vibe of Visionaries and the Dungeons and dragons cartoon which I will talk about next. It was on the list I think it was early nineties around the time of the great Exo Squad cartoon. I liked the weapons on the armour and how they all had character and followed the Quater back as King.

And like most cartoons in that era it had a rocking hair metal-esque opening theme.
I enjoyed this one as well, though I don't remember it receiving too much attention.

Your welcome for the share.
Good job on the thread by the way! It's been a lot of fun!

Dungeons and Dragons was a cartoon that was very popular in the UK, the game(s)weren't as big as they were in America but we had fighting fantasy books that were and a game show on the TV called Knightmare which was a total classic and much loved still today as it gets repeats every so often ( I will find an episode and link that too). Dungeons didn't really have much merchandise over here like a lot of the other cartoons which is a surprise considering how loved it was. The show was solid and really captured the epic fantasy feel, each episode was different and the bad guy Venger was scary and well designed. When he turned up you knew it was bad news. The ending of the show wasn't as satisfying as maybe it could have been, they never got home despite people remembering they did (I think that was a dream sequence), they stayed in the world of D & D. Regardless if you're looking for a great adventure cartoon from the past you could do a lot worse.

Galaxy Rangers was another high adventure action space western cowboy show like Bravestarr but was a team of Cowboys and girl. There was little to no merchandise over here for this one and it wasn't one of the main shows everyone remembers but to me it will always have one of the greatest theme tunes and intros.

Inspector gadget much like Transformers and co was welcomed warmly by the UK. The Peter Sellers type physical comedy translated really well over here and today people still mention "go go gadget" whatever it may be. It's had a couple of remakes and movies but the original will always be the best imo. Here is the pilot with Gadget sporting a moustache till it was changed.

One of the coolest cartoons we enjoyed over here was Defenders of the Earth, a badass theme tune written by Stan Lee of comics fame and a host of characters from golden age comic books such as The Phantom and Flash Gordon this cartoon was like a summer blockbuster movie every week.

It had it all, cool characters, an awesome bad guy in Ming the Merciless and a team of young kids who I assume we're for kids to relate to, I only remember them being annoying and getting in the way and I was 5 or so. I watched it in recent years and it still holds up.

Pro stars wasn't that big over here as most people had only heard of Michael Jordan because of his shoes. However it came at a time when more American sports were creeping over especially NFL and NBA and American Pro wrestling (baseball and hockey not so much that would come later). I thought this show was cool and it was my first introduction to ice hockey and I liked it ever since. I still want Wayne's skate shoes lol

Captain Planet was a Saturday or Sunday morning cartoon over here (don't remember which it was on a show called Top Banana or something) it was the best thing about the show. I really don't understand why it hasn't been made into a proper movie or remade as a cartoon because honestly it had a great message about looking after our environment. I still know the theme tune off by heart and never litter and seriously it's because of this little show from my childhood lol.

It was fresh and at the time quite ground breaking with a multi national, multi cultural team with celeb voices including whoopi Goldberg. Sure Planet had a mullet but he stood for something good and was a metaphor for what happens when people work together for the betterment of mankind. Really quite deep really lol.

The stories were pretty decent but the message it sent was far more important imo

IMO rednecks changed the perceptions of people with mullets. Much like terrorists ruined people with beards. But that's a rant for another thread.
Getting back on track, I'm surprised we haven't seen a modernizing of Captain Planet. With how popular the show was back in the day and reboots being such a trend in the business of show.
I haven't watched in a while but I believe the stories and messages still hold up today.
Really it was ahead of its time.

Dinosaurs and robots, probably the two most loved things to kids still today (unless they don't believe in robots). In the 80's and 90's we had a lot of cartoons both east and west about both subjects. The land before time movies were coming out and Pizza Hut did some cool toys but also there was Denver the last Dinosaur (catchy theme) and Dink ( I remember as Dino for some reason) the little dinosaur and Dino riders (IT WAS NEVER SHOWN IN THE UK SADLY) the toys were amazing though and we did have those. I liked both Denver and Dink but they weren't cool like some of the others in this thread just well made with good stories.

James Bond Jr was a cartoon that was moderately popular over here, it came out at a time when a movie called "Teen agent" did. In America it was called " if looks could kill". I always as a dumb kid thought this was on purpose. The cartoon was fun but not really a classic I can't really remember any of the stories that well but the toys were cool and they brought back Jaws and Odd Job to name a couple.

Swamp Thing was shown on the BBC here if I recall correctly, he wasn't one of the more well known characters, I was too young to have seen the movie but I did know him from Batman UK comic which was re runs of US comics. They re printed Alan Moore's Swampthing story so when the cartoon came out I ate it up. It was fun.

Droids and Ewoks. I don't remember Ewoks all that well but I remember it was fun but Droids I do remember. As a Star Wars fanatic from an early age I was glued to it. I always remembered being disappointed there were no Jedi battles and yearning for more info about the Clone wars (if only I knew lol). Droids had a cool cameo from Boba Fett too.

Theme for Droids was written and performed by Stewart Copeland from the group The Police too.

This episode of Ewoks is written by DC Comics Paul Dini

Bionic Six, I remember the theme tune and the toys specifically having metal parts to them which made them unusual in an age where plastic action figures was the norm. The cartoon was Fantastic four meets Six million dollar man. I remember it being fun but I don't recall much else from my childhood in regards to it just that the local toy shop had some of the line.

Heathcliff was watched by most of the kids I knew in school it wasn't a long cartoon so held the attention and helped grow my love of cats lol. Rude Dog and the dweebs came out some years later but it never had the same entertainment value for me.

I'm reserving this slot for when I can find the pilot episode online ( none so far) of Exo Squad. Exo Squad imo is one of the best animated series ever made in Japan or Europe or the US. It had great story, great characters and was well animated. Was it as good as Batman the Animated series? No probably not, Exo squads greatest flaw was the moral side. It's set in a world where intelligent beings were created and then put to work as slaves and then had the audacity to rebel and demand some rights lol. The humans created battle suits to fight off the created creatures and all out war begins, throw in some pirates and space opera and you have the makings of classic Sci fi. As a kid I loved this show so much I based a high school design project on it and the teacher I had liked it so much it was still hanging in the room 4 years after I left.

The older I get the more I look back and see the humans were wrong but as a kid you might not even register that. I haven't watched it since so I may have forgotten big plot points but my younger self thought it was just epic. Great toys too although I don't think we had them in the uk and i don't think they have made a uk dvd collection yet only US.

Disney had a decent presence over here with a bunch of cartoons, one they are still scratching their heads over is Mickey Mouse, we just don't like him that much lol. He's one of the least popular Disney characters. Warner brothers had a larger influence I would say with Bugs and Daffy and co so I don't think poor Mickey had a chance. What did do well were toons I will include in this thread(well from my limited experience anyway).

Gummi Bears was great I remember being in little school and pretending my juice was gummiberry juice and bouncing into my friends and vice versa( troubled child clearly lol).

Chip n Dale rescue rangers AKA Indiana Jones and Magnum PI was a fun series about gum shoe detectives/rescuers as a kid I don't think I missed an episode. It was fun and engaging and was definitely a favourite over here. I still see retro t shirts in shops here with chip n Dale on.
