The hype won me over and I watched my first boxing match this evening....and it will be the last one I watch. I know nothing about boxing or how it's scored, that being said..how did Mayweather win that fight. I didn't get to catch every minute of it, but everytime I looked up he was eating a combo and then "running" away to reset. I just don't understand it.
Well, if you land a clean, un-blocked punch you score.

There are 2 rounds definitely worth watching.
I think one has to watch this fight though.

This was just one fight. That is how Floyd fights.

Imagine how many people watched the UFC for the first time to see the all time great GSP lay on someone for 5 rounds?

They probably feel the same as you.

Yet there are amazing, knock down, drag out fights in both sports. Judging an entire sport by one fight, especially one for a guy who is known to play defense, is not giving it a fair shake. I could post hundreds of boxing matches that are ridiculously exciting and competitive.. just like hundreds of MMA fights

Mayweather just happens to be the guy who generates the most attention, money, etc. It's not like every boxing match is like this. EVERY SINGLE TIME Floyd fights, people say this exact same thing. I don't get it, well for most anyway. You said you haven't watched before so that's 100% fine. But this is how Floyd's fights go every single time.

But like I said - it's like reading about GSP, getting all hyped to see him against BJ Penn - the biggest fight ever! two p4p champions finally collide! - and then GSP kind of just ground and pounds him and lays on him for 4 straight rounds while BJ quits on his stool. Does that take away from MMA as a sport because GSP didn't go out and attempt headkicks and super man punches for 20 minutes? IMO no. If you judged the entire sport of MMA over that one fight, because it didn't exactly live up to the hype, you'd miss out on a lot of great shit. At the highest levels of combat sport, things aren't always a slugfest.

Just my 2 cents.. No one should hate on the entire sport if they didn't like this fight, or Mayweather fights in general

Anyway, I am about to watch some old Frazier fights. Because even though I'm still a boxing fan, today's era is nothing in comparison to the past. I have a feeling MMA is headed that way too. 20 years from now every fighter is gonna fight exactly the same - sloppy wrestling and sloppy kickboxing - and we will look at mid era PRIDE and 05-10 era UFC as the golden age.

Soon there will be 100 UFC events a year with 1,000 guys on the roster, 930 that nobody has ever heard of, winning decision after decision. There already is now. 90% of fighters will be under 185 lbs and women. 50% or more will be 155 and under, if they are not already.

I just think both sports have changed in recent years and maybe not for the better. Still great fights in both though. and I am happy to admit MMA has great fights more often, excitement wise. but when MMA is boring, to me at least, it's way more mind numbing than a boring boxing match.

But that's because I don't grapple, so when I watch a Jon Fitch, I want to slam my head on a wall. If I saw Floyd and didn't really get it, I would probably feel the same.

All signs point to yes. Maybe not for this fight, but when he was unbelievably fast and powerful, there is little doubt

I hate to say that because I love Manny. But, he went up like 40 lbs in weight while getting faster and stronger. He also flat out refused out of comp drug testing in 2009. If he would have done the WADA testing the same way that you see nowadays (way more common now than then), the fight we saw tonight would have happened in 2009 like everyone says it should have. That was the only hold up, Manny's refusal to take the tests

When someone puts on that much weight and gets better in every way, and refuses to do drug tests, it's just not a good look. I hope he wasn't, but I am realistic.

Greek777 @Galanis Fair enough. Boxing had never really interested me like mma did. I suppose it's just because of the different possibilities to attack in mma as opposed to boxing. I didn't realize that Mayweather was known for defense, I was under the opposite impression. The fight 2 fights before that, where the guy attempted to take a knee to take a break and oops, started off impressively with both guys on offense and ended kind of funny actually.

The GSP comment made me smile because in the middle of the Floyd fight, I thought of GSP and how he kind of reminded me of his style...very very good, but very very safe. After your comments, I may have to give it another shot sometime. Thanks for the reply.

Hey man, thanks for understanding what I meant. I was legit not trying to put down your opinion or anything. I just figured that as a new fan I could try and explain how well, if you like MMA.. you know how it can be when certain big time fighters don't really engage in slugfests every time out.

The big part everyone wanted to see was how the best offensive fighter of modern times (Manny) and the best defensive fighter of the same era (Floyd) would match up. Power and speed vs defense and accuracy.

It 100% would've been a better and more competitive fight 5 years ago, but the reason it was hyped so much is because we had to wait so long for it. Manny's career went down a few notches and he was not the Pacquiao from 2009 or so in this fight.

There's some really exciting KO artists out there right now like the undefeated middleweigfht champ, Gennady Golovkin. He's just hit the US in the last 2 years and more people are learning his name.

From wiki:

"Currently undefeated as a professional, he is the reigning WBA and IBO middleweight champion. He holds the highest KO ratio in middleweight championship history with a 90.63% knockout percentage, and is ranked the number seven pound-for-pound boxer by Ring Magazine.[1] Golovkin has never been knocked down or knocked out in over 375 fights, both as a professional and amateur. "

He's putting guys away like this in very fight, usually very early too. He's probably my favorite guy to watch right now.

Just wanted to share some cool shit, because it's like MMA.. if ya know where to look, there's guys out there who maybe are not huge draws to the public, but they are absolutely a thrill to watch.

I think GGG is on a 19 fight knockout streak at the moment. People are terrified to fight him.

Next time one of his fights comes up, or another fighter known for being a brutal finishes, I'll give you a heads up. Also, if you ever wanna see some really devastating shit, just google "Mike Tyson knockouts" for an idea of how crazy the sport can be sometimes haha.

Or, if you have 3 minutes to kill?

Check this out. This is considered one of the greatest rounds in history in one of the greatest fights in history. The entire thing only went 8 minutes total, but this first round is amazing.

Just a quick showcase of how fun and jump out of your seat inducing boxing can be too. Just depends on the styles of guys etc. But seriously. Out of all the shit I posted, watch that 9th round. The entire fight was amazing, but that shit is just something else

Is it worth watching tomorrow?
I watched this morning, and honestly if I knew the outcome and what type of match it was going to be, I wouldn't have bothered. I almost feel sorry for the suckers that paid for seats.

Well as predicted i fell a sleep before the main event, and i just watched it.
I understand what Greek777 @Galanis was trying to say in his earlier post that i shouldn't judge a sport on one fight.
But i probably won't be watching any boxing any time soon, i was utterly bored by this whole fight card.

If two men enter a ring for 12 x 3mins. and they both come out without a scratch or a bruise they didn't fight they sparred.

Let's hope Hunt will KTFO Miocic to restore my faith in combat sports.
