The Liberal party won by almost the exact amount of new voters that turned out. I was shocked to find out after the election how many people openly admitted they voted for pot.

Proportional representation is you get seats in parliament/senate based on the % of the vote you get. Coalitions are formed to get a majority, largest party in the majority usual gets pm/president, then forms a cabinet in negotiations with their coalition partners.

Or the conservative party could make compromises with the center left party to form a coalition. Or people vote differently and more parties pop up.
