He isn't in Canada! You need a safe to store that sucker.
Personal preference I'm sure, but I'd grab my shotty before any of my pistols. I'm not missing the target with a 12-gauge . I think it all depends what someone is most comfortable with.also - a handgun is better for the single purpose of home defense.
a shotgun is a 'pretty good at most stuff' firearm.
thank you for the advice. Why would i want to use something different? You should probably use something other than buckshot the first time you shoot it.
Start off with some lower velocity bird shot (71/2 or 8) till you are comfortable firing it. Buckshot will kick the shit out of your shoulder if you arent ready for it.thank you for the advice. Why would i want to use something different?
if you want some training, I can ping some folks I know in your neck of the woods to take you out and teach you the ways of the big black cylinder
I don't know if you are familiar with shooting guns or not, but:
- Respect the power. Having a gun comes with responsibility.
- If you don't know how to shoot, go to a range and an instructor will go over it with you. Learn how to operate, maintain, and fire the gun, and practice enough until you are comfortable.
- Keep your gun hidden or locked up. Make sure it is not accessible to children or inexperienced people that could handle the gun.
-Guns are not a toy, or cool to show off to friends. Keep it put away until it is time to use it.
-Always keep the gun pointed down range, or at the ground. Basically never point it at anything you aren't prepared to shoot.
-Always treat the gun as if it is loaded.
Some of this may sound silly, and I'm not trying to nag ya, but someone with a gun that doesn't know how to use is a dangerous situation. There is a reason we see all the headlines of someone that was accidentally shot.
I also have a 12-gauge for home defense, and I also use 00 buckshot. Just FYI, that is nasty ammo. Very effective. Here is a video that shows what buckshot can do.

I hear ya man. I was just trying to emphasize that a gun will only make it safer if you (and your wife) are competent at handling and firing the weapon. Be safe bro!To be honest I do not want to own a gun. As I mentioned in an earlier post my step dad has a shitload of guns so I grew up around them, but it has never been my thing. I bought it mostly because my wife is used to having a gun in the house for home defense so I got it to make her feel safer. I figure its better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
The only time it will be in my hands is if I am at the range or someone just broke into my house.
Bullshit how is he supposed to clean it if he doesn't look down the barrel to make sure nothing is clogging it. Come on man!!!Keep it pointed down. Don't look down the barrel.
