I'm not the biggest fan of Muay Thai when it comes straight from the Stadiums, the way it's judged as a sport I find really fucks over the style of fighter I like(guys who use their hands as a main weapon), but I love it as a martial art and when you see Thai's compete in Kickboxing they can be very good to watch(Sittichai, Buakaw, Jomthong and Yodsanklai are four of my favorites, someone like Sangmanee is great aswell)

Some of my favorite Kickboxers are Muay Thai based with great Western Boxing fundamentals like Petro and Levin.

Anyway, I'd really like to see a few 18-20 year olds who've been training and competing from a young age make the crossover, train Wrestling and Jiu Jitsu for half a decade or so, and take on the Fly and Bantamweight divisions... show MMA fans what REAL Muay Thai looks like. Muay Thai is already a bit like Greco, lots of upper body clinching(more too it than just the Plum/controlling the head you almost never see this in Stadium Muay Thai because everyone knows how to clinch), off balancing and trips, I'm willing to bet many of them could adapt too Wrestling quite comfortably and good luck too the guys who actively want to clinch with them anyway.

If Thai's really want to make good money(1 US dollar is worth like 35 Thai Baht, a 25 and 25 pay cheque is 1 and 3/4 mil baht), they should go to MMA, there just needs to be one or two breakthrough stars that can have some success in the UFC and then you'll see more guys do it . They often dominate Euro and Japanese Kickboxing and without the ability to use all of their tools(when they can it's really no contest), sometimes that being a detriment as these guys are often strongest in the clinch or with their elbows... we think we've seen great clinch fighting from Jones, DJ and both Silva's, wait until you see someone who's lived and breathed Muay Thai since before they were an adolescent.

We already see guys with Boxing and Kickboxing backgrounds do pretty well in MMA.

this could be done right now with Yodwicha who is 20 years old and effectively a muay thai legend already and whose strongest weapon is the clinch, to the point where his fights are kinda boring - he just smothers everybody in the clinch. this kid has had some of the best win streaks ever since muay thai records from fight-to-fight are available. he's fighting kickboxing now where his best skil is denied.

the thai clinch is strictly upper body clinching but one of the main staples in muay thai scoring is keeping balance and it highly favors sweeps and trips. it's not like math where you add muay thai clinch + freestyle wresting = great grappling; but they'll have a great base. I guess an mma org would just have to approach their gym and work out a deal. pay them change and have them train MMA at a top gym for ~2 years. what could go wrong? it would be much better than clinging onto old ufc has-beens;

I'm not terribly familiar with Yodwicha, I'm sure his knees(he is a clincher afterall) and kicks are good, and I'm guessing he's got good elbows, but how are his hands/punch defense?

He's not small, that's a good thing. He could be popular if he finishes lots of guys.

Would love to catch some of the ONE shows--are they shown in the US or Canada or are they only broadcast regionally in SE Asia? I know they make a big deal over them but from the shows i have seen they seem to run along a sub par bellator type of event.

in mt all he ever does is clinch. his hands are nothing special, but the thais always carry the timing and reflexes from a lifetime of fighting. I just watched some quick clips of his latest fights in kickboxing and he doesn't look bad but his thing is the clinch.

Typically only available in Asia. Kind of annoying as they have some really good fighters on their roster and it's nearly impossible to ever watch them fight.

Almost every card is on a Friday morning in the US and can only be watched by purchasing the stream on ONE's website.

If you live in Canada, Fight Network airs them live usually.

Dejdamrong is fighting!

Can't miss this one. Glad I have FN.
just realized that Sagetdao Petpayathai will be making his mma debut in this card as well. I posted the news in the "News from Thailand" thread but never put 2 and 2 together that's the power of my attention span - reading the lineup in the first post to the end was too much for me.

this will be very interesting. Sagetdao will probably be the most accomplished muay thai fighter to ever make that transition to mma. he was a 4 time Stadium champion in Thailand and holds wins over legends like Saenchai, Jomthong, Petchboonchu, Singdam and Nong-O. he was a clinch specialist in muay thai and has been training at Evolve MMA for a few years.

I don't expect too much since at 30 years old he is a muay thai ancient and he was getting beat up pretty hard in his last years in the sport. let's see what happens.

Yeah, true, he's pretty up there in age.

But Dejadamrong is 38 I believe, that's old in combat sports terms in general.

I've heard of Sagetdao, I believe, back when I was first learning about Muay Thai, he fought Kevin Ross?

yes he beat Ross by TKO but I never watched the fight. he must've raped Ross if it was full thai rules.

No doubt he did.

It's funny how Joe Rogan goes on about Ross... he's the only commentator the UFC has for striking analysis, yet, he's really just a fan like the rest of us, he has Jiu Jitsu knowledge and I've learned alot about it from listening too him, but outside of a Black Belt in TKD , some amateur American Kickboxing and some training sessions he's had with JWP, does he really have the knowledge too be telling us what's going on in there?

oh please don't get me started on this topic. Rogan doesn't know SHIT about muay thai/kickboxing - not that there's anything wrong with it and he actually means no harm at all - but he's the one who has the channel to be spitting out nonsense about both sports to a huge audience of combat sports fans.

on the one hand he gets excited and in a way or another promotes Glory/Lion Fight but on the other hand he is responsible for spreading fake storylines like "Ramon Dekkers went to Thailand and beat them all at their own rules", "muay thai fighters just plod forward and stand and bang", "Melvin Manhoef/Kevin Ross/JWP/Joe Schilling are the second coming of striking", "throw a leg kick, you're an elite muay thai fighter" and others.

he is just a semi-educated fan who knows only a few select high profile fighters and thinks they are the best of the best. if he takes an hour to talk about stand up-only fighting you will lose track of how many times he will say "Melvin Manhoef this, Joe Schilling that..." and it will never go beyond this.

Who knows how old some of these Asian fighters really are. Seems like they tend to lie about that shit a lot. Half this card is probably in their mid 60's.
