This could keep it very simple in terms of who fights for championships or it could be very messy if a lot of fighters have the same record. Is there a limit on the number who will advance to the playoffs?

They could just have a really long post-season.

I think White got this ball rolling years ago when allegations began against the UFC.

I want them to do well, but
Tourney based promotions haven’t done well. I loved IFL, but it had its flaws. Seems that this new promotion is looking to take what other tourney promotions did right and leave what they didn’t.

The format seems to almost be like bellators old format. The only difference is that bellators format was just "play offs" just knock out stage.

This new format seems to have a "regular season" per say. I hope they do well but like I said, tourney based promotions haven’t had that much success

Yeah I got that email this morning, I'm still not sure what to think about it. I can't tell how they're going to approach it, or if anything will change at all after the big tourney.

So let's see if we get it right - every weight class will have a "belt" up for grabs, and every fighter in the division will fight normally and if they win they will have a chance to enter the tournament to win big money? It said it will go by record, so tomato can mcgee will have the same chance for success as their top talent, as long as they both keep winning? No strength of schedule? I feel like there could be some serious mismatches if we just go by record, and some fighters will definitely be tossed into the deep end after this year.

I look forward to learning more. It's...an interesting idea.

Well Hakeem Dawodu has one more fight on his contract with WSOF....But I bet this doesn't convince him to stay. I think the UFC & Bellator are already talking to him...and it looks like he's moving somewhere to train at a major camp.

That can't be right...this isn't the NCAA.
Based on Eddie Alvarez's old Zuffa contract from 2013 that went public it sounds like they can talk to them, but can't accept any offers or make any agreements:

"ARTICLE XII
RIGHT TO MATCH

12.1 During the one (1) year period after conclusion of the Term for any reason whatsoever (the "Matching Period"), ZUFFA shall have the option to match the financial terms and conditions of any offer made to Fighter for an Other Bout as defined in Section 3.6 of this Agreement. Fighter shall not accept any offer or enter into a contract or agreement with any other promotional entity during the Matching Period without complying with this Section 12.1. "

I am ALL ABOUT a tourney league. There may be some issues here but I am glad someone is going back to the tourney deal!

I do worry about the regular season+playoffs schedule. Not sure how you can have mmartists fight that many times in a year.

PRIDE, for all intents and purposes, was a tournament league with their champions even competing in the tourneys.

The amateurs do with some extra gear I think, like shin guards. It changes the fighting, but they have been very positive about the experience they can get in a shorter time that way.

I wonder if they will disallow elbows to help prevent people dropping out from cuts like other tournaments.

I just don't see how this possibly works.

I don't see how this works out to less than five fights per fighter per year, and then you better pray no one gets injured. I'm all for keeping fighters active but this seems like far too many things can and will go wrong.

The only idea I'm seeing here that's both good and practical is a two month off-season.

How many fights can someone have on tuf + finale? Not saying it's great for the fighters, but it can happen, right?

Also, if they manage the weight issue well, fighter's not cutting too much will help, I think.

The minimum you can do is 7 fights a year here.

I'd be far less skeptical if this was a straight tournament situation, which both calls for fewer fights and where you could easily insert alternates. What's the regular season back-up plan here?

On top of that, 23 out of 25 TUF seasons have had a number of months between the semi-finals and finals, but that's a secondary thing here.

Here is a really good article explaining how the amateurs do it. Maybe it's a possibility here.
