Being put into a drug induced coma is not good news. A person is in very rough shape before it's even considered. In May I lost my cousin in a similar way, truck going thought red light t- boned his Harley. Ten days later he was gone.

No matter if your a fan of Matt or not. This is terrible news, well wishes to Matt and his family in this horrific time. Whatever happened his family is going through hell and needs everyone's support.

I hope Matt makes a full recovery.

Well this sucks.

How does a truck collide with a train? The wording is interesting. Not train collides with truck...

I haven't felt this sad in a while about a man I respected from a very young age.

I really hope no trechary is involved, no alcohol or alike. He's been cast into a strange light in recent years but his prowess in his run was unquestionable. The sport needs people like him, damn.

Prayers with him. Hope they work...

"Hughes crossed the railroad tracks directly in front of a train and the train struck the passenger side of the truck. "

usually when a vehicle strikes a train it's because they thought they could beat the train and slammed on the brakes too late.

I have a couple family members who work for BNSF, my cousin's husband is an engineer. It's possible that the crossing has overgrown vegetation, or that a railroad cars were parked on the opposite track too close to the crossing. They're supposed to park railroad cars some certain distance from the crossing, but stopping those trains isn't an exact science. And the crossing is where the crew gets picked up, so they tend to error on the side of not walking further. And the railroad is supposed to maintain the vegetation, but they come through once a year (at best) and cut everything back.

Both of those are fairly common causes of car/train collisions.

It will be interesting to see what happened. There are only a few around here that have just the RRXX signs with no lights. But usually the train blasts their horn for a long time. But I guess if music is blaring you can't here it. There were also more than a few times the lights didn't work-or they keep going off enough that people ignore them. At least here, it is pretty clear either way to see if something is coming. But if it's not, I usually slow down pretty good. Who knows. Double or triple tracks might be another story. I can totally see some apparatus not working-but again they will be blasting their horn. I dunno... Just want to hear more details about the crossing.

Was the train derailed or stop in any way? I might have missed that...

Nope and that's the scary part. You would think that if he were making progress, the family would have released some sort of statement.
Yeah that's pretty crazy, hoping for the best ..but definitely not a good sign.

Pat Miletich: Matt Hughes ‘surprising the doctors,’ no longer in coma

Quote from article:
Miletich also relayed details of the accident, explaining that Hughes was apparently stuck on a hill and wasn’t able to cross the track in time to avoid the train.

“The [train] engineer said, Matt had stopped on the gravel road,” Miletich said. “It’s a hill, goes up, it’s a real quick hill that goes up to the railroad tracks. He had stopped, then tried to get across it in time. The train was going almost 50 MPH.

“When you’re out in the country, there’s no crossing guards, there’s no lights,” Miletich continued. “It’s almost like, he saw it, then tried to beat it. ///
