There won't be any ridiculousness if Iran back down. They can never defeat America in a war, they should humbly accept defeat and conduct themselves better in the future. I think that's what the USA is trying to achieve here. It's a bitch slap

Nothing short of a recession can derail Trump's re-election.
I agree almost. Strong economy and Trump is an edge out favorite. But he's a dick and people WANT to vote against him. A charismatic moderate Dem would do it. I dont see one without baggage at the moment, making Trump a continued favorite.

It's the equivalent of Iran murdering Pompeo. Would that be acceptable to you?
In fairness, it's not really.

Soleimani was a ranked General on the ground ordering specific military interventions.
The Quds force he directed oversaw direct combat operations and assassination plans (actual ones, like targeting ambassadors) including those against the United States military.
He's likely a fair military combatant at that point as much as any ranked General in the United States rolling through Afghanistan or Iraq.

There's questions about drone legality and the constant moving fence of "defense" when attacking to prevent an upcoming assault. There's the consideration of benefit of the target. There's our lack of status of forces agreement with Iraq which is constantly shifting. But trying to twist a ranked general commanding on the ground interventions into a Bureaucrat only isn't truthful.

Also, since you raised the specter, in countries where the CIA has chosen and funded a side in a civil war (lets say smaller and/or losing side), if Pompeo showed up and the other side killed him, I wonder what the legality would be.

It needing to be a necessarily 'moderate' Dem is not true. Many progressive positions are very popular even among Republicans, and being a moderate leaves you boxed with your attacks on Trump, because he runs well to the left of centre himself on certain issues.

Republican strategis also don't care if you are a socialist or a neoliberal, Just look at Obama - he was a firm neoliberal and warmongerer, but if you listened to conservative media he was a communist muslim (contradiction not important) terrorist sleeper agent born in Kenya.

That's where Democrats fuck up - they think if they run to the right, Republicans won't call them communists, forgetting that they'll just call them communists anyway.

But you are right about charisma. Obama would still have skullfucked Donny for that reason. But there just is none among Dem frontrunners.

Bernie is an 80-year-old jew with a Brooklyn accent and he still appeals to more people than any other candidate.

If that's not charisma then idk what is

In a civilised country you have the burden of proof.

We do not know who mined the oil ship. Which wasn't even an American ship. Some Iraqis protesting against the American embassy also isn't a murder charge against someone that wasn't there.

This a fucked up move.

Just go around murdering state leaders.

You can tell the people who think this is a good idea. They are trumptards and American fuck yeahs. And the wannabe Americans like Daeng.

Europe want no part of this ridiculousness. Idiotic move.
You’re my new favorite white boy dumbass.

Our descriptions are probably failing us.
Certain very liberal positions are popular here. But they are currently packaged in candidates that want to sell the whole progressive sandwich, not piecemeal the parts that would have high support. The whole sandwich is DOA in America. Most of the fail occurs in the economic arena where higher taxing and large spending bring with it concern that it will disrupt the hot economy Trump has going right now. Its the economy stupid...

I understand what you are saying but Sole really was their leaders right hand man. He was basically Chief of Defence.

And you have to factor in America is not at war with Iran. Or wasn't.

I can't see the forward thinking in this, I have no idea if there was an upcoming assault. History suggests there wasn't. Trump is struggling too, he is now tweeting or suggesting he did it because Sole killed a load of protesting Iranians last month. Will Trump do the same to the Bolivian Chief of Defence for what he did last month?

It's insane.

There is no real 'law' in international relations. There is only power projection and domestic politics. I think the talk about whether or not Soleimani was 'fair game' is pretty simplistic.

The question is not whether the US was justified in killing the General, the question is what Americans have to gain from going to war with Iran and thus was Trump justified in ordering a high-level assassination that could start one?

That Soleimani organized attacks on American soldiers should not be relevant in these strategic calculations.

Was Brezhnev responsible for killing American soldiers during Vietnam? Yes. Was Reagan responsible for killing Soviet soliders in Afghanistan. Yes. Did that mean it was a good idea for either side to drop bombs on the White House or Kremlin? Fuck no.

Soleimani's military position does give more breathing space for other countries. If the US had taken out Javad Zarif say, there would have been a massive international backlash. So it's not irrelevant. But it's a pretty marginal consideration for what is essentially an act of war.

it would be like assassinating Mattis when he was Commandant of the Marine Corps.

About us droning this guy?
My take is that I better dust off my boots.
I liked it better when I was in The middle East And it was all about ISIS. Those seem like some guys worth rolling on.
Yeah, fuck. Most Iranians I’ve met have been cool, industrious fellas.
Fuck the ayatollah and mullah though.
