The batboy brought him that bat mid-AB.
You can hear the pitch before the bat spewed cork all over the infield like Ron Jeremy's jizz in Fuzzy Bump Busters IV that it sounded like it broke. There's no way if he knew it was a corked bat that he would have risked taking another cut with it.
But Spuds served his 7-game suspension and refused to name the player that the bat actually belonged to.

as a Red Sox fan I knew giving him 313 mil was a huge mistake, head case, absolutely terrible at defense and who is very good offensively but not Judge or Soto great
He'll come around. He's a solid bat.
To your point - he isn't Soto or Judge. But he's a .350 OBP guy who will get you 30 HRs a year.
With Bregman in Boston you probably don't need to worry about Devers glove, do you? Assuming he's DH. Although typically you want more than 30 bombs and a 350 OBP from your DH.
