What's the danger I put myself in? In the tourney the guy was trying to do some shit with his legs to put pressure on me but it didn't work. A guy in our club was giving me the "it'll only work for so long" look when I was controling my partner last night but I didn't inquire.

I feel ya on the Kimura trap. Anything Kimura related seems to be my early go to so I'd love to hear some set ups anything else to put it to use.
The guy you had the body triangle on was probably trying to foot lock you like you do to someone who crosses their feet when they have your back. This works great if they simply have their feet crossed, but not if they have an actual body triangle.

Guys often will try to roll onto the side that your foot is facing to pressure your foot into the mat.

It doesn't bother me (yet?), but my coach has warned me to switch to the other side when they do that.

YMMV

Could you guys give me preferred methods of taking ones back? I feel strong there but have limited ways of getting into position. No starting position specifically, whatever sequence you have will be appreciated.

Lord that's a loaded query.... Multiple ways from the guard, you can set it up from multiple open guards, or through an arm drag from closed guard. From the mount you can set it up from the gift wrap, same from side mount. You can use the kimura trap to help set it up, or use collar drags to set it up.... Again, there are a bunch of ways, just depends on your entry point.

Gift wrap is my go to. I'm always interested in anything from the Kimura though.

Kesa Gatame. Get a lot of mixed reviews about this position, what's everyone's thoughts?

While you can transition to subs, kesa was invented as a pin, since you can win by pin in judo. Wrestlers use it as a pin too, usually following a head and arm throw.

You can tap a noob with pressure from the pin itself, but most non-judoka seem to prefer to have the underhook because (among other reasons) it makes it harder for the bottom guy to take the back.

If you get good at it you can tap high level guys with it as well. I'm a black belt abour 225 or 230 and I regularly tap black belts with it. The bigger the guy the easier for me to get the tap usually. I prefer to do it from scarf, but kesa works.

Just about to add this... I, like Josh, find success from the scarf too with a series of attack. Famously, watch how Josh Barnett subbed Dean Lister from this position.

100% This and then add in a Sambo or Catch Series on the near side arm with your legs, followed by a straight arm lock series with a Karo Parisyan Shoulder Lock and you're golden.

Been working on transitioning between guards effectively

Now I feel I can transition very smoothly between double sleeve/spider, collar sleeve, de la Riva, single leg and any variation of these guards

I’ve also been watching a lot of Jonathan Thomas via Instagram. His style really suits mine and everything he teaches is what he’s used himself at high level competitions. Such awesome content

There are many ways.
I made it back to BJJ for the first time in half a dozen years today and wound up taking a black bet's back with an old method my muscle memory remembered.
From trying to pass the guard he puts you in half-guard. You underhook far side & clasp hands and 'trick' him by basically sitting him up (like you're about to carry hm & almost begin to stand up.
As soon as his torso is vertical you fall on your side and you both roll. In mid-roll, throw your other hook in and voila! You have his back.
Surprised myself (and him) with that one.

Friendly reminder, this is what Shish Khabib thinks of your beloved BJJ...

Keep all the shitposting and other ridiculousness out of the grappling forum. You have the Cageside and OTL to do all that. In here we operate with respect. We also support and talk about all grappling, including Sambo, Catch, and Judo as well as BJJ (especially since a lot of us train in some to all of these elements). Not to be all "Dad" in here, but I like that we don't have all the shitposting.

LoL @ Me putting up a picture of Khabib disrespecting BJJ which is what this thread is about being shitposting. If respect means so much to you then you should be offended by his lack of respect towards BJJ which was uncalled for...
