It's not. I posted several times including earlier of the various groups that arrived in Charlottesville and find themselves on the up or down side. Only some are Nazi racists.




My argument is that may want the statue up for lots of reasons that don't fit your box.
I've given my personal opinion multiple times and my conflicted feelings. I take umbrage with your characterization that if I were to settle on wanting the statue up, I must be a racist, etc etc.

I don't think everyone who wants the statue up is racist - I was referring to the racists specifically, not the people who found themselves on the same side as the racists. I think those people are misguided. I was going to articulate that I think wanting the statue taken down is a far more defensible position further.

Either you want the statue down because it makes you butthurt, you want it up because you are a racist, or you want it up because you have some vague notion of defending a historical symbol - and act like it very clearly being at least somewhat of a symbol of racism doesn't matter. I think some people in the 3rd category very much fall into the 2nd and just don't have the balls to say it, but I don't think all of them do by any stretch.

I just think this 3rd position is silly - it's clearly a symbol of the Confederacy which is forever entwined with slavery. It's not the same as say wanting a Jefferson statue taken down because he personally owned slaves. Why you would to spend your time defending it against people who have a legitimate reason to want it down is beyond me.

Robert E. Lee wasn't such a bad guy and served his country with distinction - until he went to war with it to protect the right to own other human beings. He wasn't just on the wrong side of history, he was on the wrong side of even his time period. Unfortunately that last part cancels out the good things.

That's not really accurate, and it certainly wasn't accurate 150 years ago when slaves were being kept to work land on behalf of the plantation owners.

Again, that may apply to today, but didn't apply 150 years ago. Even at that, there are a lot of farms in the area here where most of the hard labor is done by hired hands.

For me, I am not that educated on it and have been trying to change that. Nor am I hurt by it. Again, I'm not sure then statues in park names matter that much in the grand scheme. I don't even know all the figures, but Lee is very complicated and with it I immediately start distrusting the "he's a racist slave owner so tear it down" mantra. At some point, art and history matter. And as I mentioned earlier I'm conflicted in each case probably deserves an individual solution. What does the plaque say? Does it Champion the Antebellum White hero of the South? Could we be using these statues as a historical and teachable moment as a link to the past? A solemn reverence to a man intricately involved in a bad time, but also intricately involved in our country is developments and history, and what choices we would have preferred to take doing the past through today's lens?

Once you simply removed all the statues, what is left? Where's the impromptu conversation and lesson? Relegated to a building behind admission? Relegated to grade school textbooks?

I think we should be thinking bigger than "take down all Civil War statues in public spaces".

For many, and I'm starting to include me on this part, the fear is that if we lightning speed take them all down now without a broader conversation, no other options exist. And I think it's pretty heavy-handed at a surface level.

A fair argument, but I would say that it is more important to ensure kids are taught properly in school, rather than keeping monuments up that were commissioned at a time when blacks were still getting lynched and these types of statues represented more than just distant history.

The funny thing about that is we deported our Haitians a year ago. Now that Trump says it's time for yours to go home they're trying to come up here. Boy, are they going to be in for a surprise.

And I always thought it was a Scottish name until Conor came along.

I was genuinely asking though I am aware of the Mc/Mac national distinction. Being Canadian and given Canada's large Scottish population I am well familiar with the MacGregor name but didn't realize that there was an Irish variation of the name until the advent of Conor. I wonder how widespread the name actually is in Ireland?

And yeah, until I saw you two posting back to back I don't think I was ever fully aware that there were two (that I know of) McGregor boys here.

Interestingly I took a break from mma a few years ago and basically missed this entire McGregor phenomenon. His self promotion skills are really impressive though, you pick up on that straight off.
