I don't get the impression that he's disingenuous. I just get the impression that his generally uber-conservative views are hard for us to understand and even more difficult to watch someone try to reconcile. It reminds me of a university professor I was listening to on a podcast the other day. Both her and the host are uber-progressive, so they're starting their discussion from a point that they have decided "Everyone agrees" but in reality, few people agree with that starting point and it in turn makes the rest of the conversation seem stupid.
