Another added benefit of not fucking everything up from the beginning like the US - you can actually test anyone that has symptoms because you no longer need to ration the tests. In Oz, we've moved from not only making tests available to everyone but campaigning to trying to get anyone with any flu symptoms at all to get tested.

It's a virtuous cycle vs a vicious cycle. You start by getting on top of it, you can stop rationing tests, which means you catch more positives, which means you get more on top of it. You start by fucking it up, you have to ration more tests, you identify less positives, which means you get more fucked up.

It's starting to look like the US should have just gone full Sweden. If you are going to half-ass it, you might as well just focus on flattening the curve a little, pile up a few million bodies and then just move on. Because right now, you're just getting the worst of both approaches - slowly wrecking the economy while doing a piss poor job of containment.

The scary truth is though, if no vaccine/treatment can be found and this thing stays, countries like Australia will have actually made a terrible mistake by being too successful with containment, because we will just have to go through the whole thing again.
Australia has the advantage of batting the home half of the inning.

That's a local shortage. As I said what's true at your local store isn't necessarily true for the entire supply chain.

People also need to stop going to Costco during this pandemic, but that's another story.
I said I was only speaking of my area. People need to stop panic buying, which we just seen the full ridiculousness of the masses with the TP and hand sanitizer.

It's funny. Every single instance of panic buying I've heard of has stemmed from Costco. The first rumblings of any of these panic buys start with "So and so was at Costco on the weekend and.....!" then the local news reports "Live from Costco wher ethe shelves are bare!!!"

Apparently people don't realize how Costco inventory works and that they frequently have empty sections, then freak the fuck out.

I wanna know about costco!
They're business model is to order just enough of a product as they don't have a storage area. So it's common for them to have empty sections of stuff. In the current environment when people see something empty, they immediately buy as much of said item as they can the next time they see it somewhere whether they need it or not.

It's so stupid, people are buying massive chest freezers to fill up. Meanwhile I'm wondering why they didnt have a stocked up freezer before this pandemic.

Cui bono?
It allows for broader diffusion of responsibility and also allows people to not have to resort to less politically popular actions. Real contact tracing for example requires more intrusive surveillance and quarantining than what's been managed so far. Of course, there are plenty of other plausible explanations for the testing shortage from slowed manufacturing to getting out of the gate late to limited lab analysis capability. But at this point, for there not to have even been a plan or timeline of how to expand capacity and for it to not even be talked about much is negligent at the least.

oh ya
I know this

I get all hooked on something then they no longer carry it

breaks my little heart, they used to have a fresh coconut water(had to stay cold) that was pink from natural antioxidant.

I do think stories of costco fuel the panic buying...at the one here they have a dry erase board that states what they are out of as you walk in...I think that board scares the folks into filling their carts more

I think you're looking for malice where stupidity will suffice.

Y'all need to be careful with all that meat smoking. Too much smoking and you'll catch something and it'll kill you.
