According to the site I'm looking at, Cali is at 6187 so far today. Looks like Texas is going to break 5000 again today too. California, Texas, Florida, Arizona, Georgia and Louisiana seem to be leading the pack the last couple of days. New York has only had around 700 new cases/day the last couple of days. Even though NY by far has the most total cases and deaths, their numbers seem to be leveling out and lowering compared to the states above.

My friend is an emergency medicine doctor. Her mother just died from Corona virus 2 days ago. Only 57 years old.

As we see these numbers going up we will all start to know people who died from this personally.

I looked only quickly, but this seems to be the first day week over week (for a single day) that USA deaths went up in something like the last 7 weeks :*(

It's interesting that A) I was right, as usual and B) that Phoenix, which I used as an example of perhaps the safest place because of the extreme heat, is now getting fucked as hard as anyone.

I know the science has moved towards the humidity/heat combination rather than just heat, but it still shows that the hopes for a summer savior was fanciful.

AZ also has a lot of high-risk populations. All of the reservations I passed on the way north had barricades and checkpoints on all the roads in...big signs that the community was closed to outsiders due to COVID. Indians, Hispanics, and the elderly...and a large contingent of people who think that masks are for liberals. Madness.

You also have to remember that most AZ summer activities involve being in the AC, which can facilitate spread.

I wish there was greater consistency with when tests were reported and we could see the most likely date someone contracted the virus.

I say that because it was 43°C in South Florida today, with daytime humidity around 60%. If there is any truth to the humidity+heat=rona dead faster theory, I doubt there were many transmissions of the virus today.

IIRC, Lake Havasu was locked down during spring break this year, but we still get a shitload of travelers through on their way to/from Mexican destinations like Cabo and Cancun.

ASU is usually a pretty big 'party school', but the new dean has really quelled that so there isn't as much popping off around campus/Mill Ave as a decade ago. When I went to school there in the early 90s, it was pretty easy to spend every night burning through whiskey and coke.

I note that here in Texas mask use is largely by racial lines.
I am not convinced that's what this data is showing or causation...but it did make me think of that observation over the weekend when I entered a restaurant to pick up to-go. Consistently I'm the only young white person wearing a mask in my area that isn't employed at the establishment.
