May 26: Florida has 52,255 known cases of COVID-19. The Miami metropolitan area, comprised of three counties, has a whopping 56% of the state's cases despite only having 30% of the state's population.

June 5: Florida enters phase 2 of its reopening in 64/67 counties, with the aforementioned Miami metropolitan area counties (Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach) excluded because of the high case numbers.

June 15: Palm Beach County enters a narrowed phase 2 of its reopening, leaving Broward and Miami-Dade as the only counties in the state that haven't entered phase 2.

June 26: Florida has 122,960 known cases of Covid-19. The Miami metropolitan area's share of state cases has dropped to 46% (from 56% on May 26). Palm Beach County, which entered a narrowed phase 2 reopening on June 15 and which only enacted a face mask mandate on June 25, has had the largest increase in cases, relative to population size, of the three counties in the metropolitan area. Miami-Dade and Broward counties had put mask mandates in place on April 9 and April 10, respectively.

How do they work?
can't be in that small of an environment?

Regardless of the numbers shown on the detectors breathing inside a mask surely doesn't allow for as much oxygen intake as without, and of course carbon dioxide input will be raised.

You are breathing through the mask, not inside it. Oxygen and carbon dioxide are gases and can pass through the mask. The only people who should have trouble are people who already find it hard to breathe and someone experiencing anxiety.

Surgeons wear masks for hours on end. Their blood work hasn't shown any higher levels of carbon dioxide.

It's uncomfortable, yes. But once you get used to wearing a mask you literally forget it's there (or I do and all the people I work with). Just like someone first wearing eyeglasses. It's annoying until you get used to it.

And now to the science of that meter. It's reads percentage of oxygen levels in the atmosphere as an indicator to balance of gases present. If the oxygen level goes down that means another gas has been introduced into the atmosphere. It's up to the user to determine which gas and if it's dangerous. Humidity also effects the reading. So I'd wager the detector on the tube would eventually alarm after placing it in your mouth even without a mask. Because then you have introduced a warm wet atmosphere along with carbon dioxide which will displace the oxygen around it.
