What about when I told him to "do Chicago" (as in, compare the infection rate in the greater Chicago area to the infection rate in the greater Toronto area) and he came back with only population and density statistics.

He is a special kind of special, that's for sure.
Look at those goal posts dance.

I was going from memory and mistakenly stated Toronto's population as the GTA's. I also over stated Toronto's population. It's closer to 3 million, not 4.

Even if the GTA's population was the same as NYC's it's still 10 times larger geographically so I'm not sure exactly what you think was so egregious.
That's why it was funny - NYC is obviously far more dense, but you felt the need to exaggerate the difference anyway.

But as you've shown, NYC is the exception. The City of Toronto and the City of Chicago have almost identical total populations and densities. The City of Toronto is denser than any other city in the US.

Oh, I forgot that you're still holding out for the twindemic. Nevermind.

A more measured and cautious approach to reopenings and distancing in Toronto.
It's clear that density is a big issue for initial spread but it seems less so once restrictions are in effect.

The City of Melbourne is the most densely populated area in Australia but it was Melbourne's sparsely populated outer-suburbs that go hit much harder in the second wave. This is because all the poor people live in the outer suburbs here, and the main correlations with covid spread have proven to be income and language. While inner-city Melbourne is dense (by Australian and most American city standards), it's also rich.

Because US and Canadian cities have more inner-city poverty, it's hard to tell when density is at play and when income is.

We learned a generation earlier than you Yanks and Canucks that we can't be fucked travelling 45 minutes to work each day, so we got started on jacking up all the real estate prices and pushing the poors out to the middle of nowhere earlier. You're definitely following our lead now though.

Having a sparse population is not the primary reason for the comparably much lower infection rate in Canada, as you suggested.
Population density, or lack of it, helps to minimize initial spread as Sheepdog @Saloth Sar pointed out. The reason for America's abnormal infection and death rates has more to do with its population of unhealthy morons than it does lockdown measures.

I am in the office and the city for the first time since February. How do people live in cities, they smell bad?
