Apparently suicides in Oregon have been on an upward trend since 2000.

So in other words it has nothing to do with COVID-19. Got it

Yes it is a fairly unhealthy state mentally
Might be the dark wet winters that get people down

I noticed Montana was really bad for mental health also

You miss the point

My point wasn't that Covid was causing the suicide deaths in Oregon
My point was that here suicide deaths are more frequent than covid deaths for the time being(could change of course as we get more virus hospitizations)

A lockdown and economic depression has been shown to affect mental health...If you want to debate this then I will engage you in good faith.

Some studies and models state that 1% rise of unemployment adds .78% to the suicide rate
Unemployment is a well-established risk factor for suicide. In fact, 1 in 3 people who die by suicide are unemployed at the time of their deaths. For every one-point increase in the unemployment rate, the suicide rate tends to increase .78 points. One of the silent drivers of our current suicide crisis is the high percentage of working-age men not participating in the labor force.

The last line above may explain Splinty @Splinty 's question from two posts above

I think you were quite clear on this.

People are just being beastly to you now.

They scent blood.

I mean, as a result of him pushing for data we all discovered that there was been an upward trend in self murders in Oregon for at least 20 years. Seems pretty useful to me.
I also found interesting that Texas has a pretty low rate
Most interesting was that NY has a very low rate...I would have guessed that living packed in like sardines wouldn't be good for the mental health but it appears that isn't the case

Alaska Montana Wyoming have horrible rates...Beautiful places but bad mental health

wait wtf
why are you killing yourselves more if the employment rate was going down so much since the great recession?

I answered that to the best I could...and I don't think I have a good answer.

My best guess is the weather or maybe it is technology and the dependence upon it.

What is your best guess?

I was considering the astonishing number of death to come with that spike
Ya I think it could get quite ugly in that way.

Probably not just here

I wonder if all states have such a huge unemployment rise

Small businesses here are getting dusted for sure

I never once said Oregon's Suicides were related to anything specific
The post you originally quoted was asking exactly that. So you've wasted everyone's time and showed that the illiteracy rate in Oregon must be higher than average.

Ya I forgot those
Lotta Pill People and Meth/Heroin people here sadly
Maybe not the isolation
Looks like portland has a super high suicide rate too
Liberal with resources, urban, etc.

lots of drugs though

Scandinavian countries have high rates and some people have pushed associations with altitudes and latitude. So maybe drugs + dark dreary weather. Both have evidence, but seems real strange the rate is going up while economy is getting better.
