To be fair, they pretty much have to be on a remote device of some sort. I don't think the Lethal Weapon style bomb on a clock is a thing anymore. You'd also have to be really, really good with your timing to use a timer. Shooting yourself first makes sense, he'd probably have seen his share of failed S-vests.
