For years, VW dominated the diesel market. No one else was even close to their power, fuel economy, and low emissions. They were set as the example for other manufacturers to follow in that regard. And none of them could compete. Some college, I forget which, was doing a test as a project, and the emissions were off the chart. It escalated from there, and people looked into what was happening. VW, from leadership down, was cheating. They developed an advanced system that the vehicle knew when it was being tested, changed the emissions to meet regulations, then reverted afterwards. But when they were meeting emission regulations, they could not perform the same way. When they were being driven by consumers, the emissions drastically exceeded the allowed amount.

So VW was forced to offer a fix or buy the vehicles back, the consumer's choice. I chose the buyack because they offered almost what I paid when I bought it new, and I put a lot of miles on those two years I owned it. A lot of people went and bought as many of these VWs as they could and then turned themin for the buyback since there was no limit and it was not limited to the original owner.
Crazy to think they went to all that effort...

When they could have instead just taken a page out of the Italians' playbook & lied. lmao

Don't know how it is in other places, but in Sacramento in the 80s/90s you would either find out word of mouth or drive your POS around til you found a really sketchy shop that did smog tests.

Sometimes they fiddled around with shit so you'd pass then put it back after & Sometimes your car never even got touched.... but you always left with your sticker.

I heard there was a huge counterfeit market for the stickers as well which wouldn't surprise me at all.

I will, begrudgingly, admit that they are 200,000mi engines but it's a 60,000mi body & running gear.

My biggest issue is it's not a truck, lol.
It's for guys that want a truck but don't really want a truck or their wives wouldn't let them get a truck but agreed to that monstrosity because it has a backseat for the babies.

I would make a minor change and say it's for guys that want a truck but don't need one. Most suburban guys, myself included, need the truck bed a handful of times a year. Dump runs, lumber from home depot, etc. Something like that should be more popular than guys buying massive trucks to occasionally use as a truck. But the perception of it not being a real truck has guys buying a Tundra instead so they look cooler.
