There is a shortage of random non argumentative threads. The most prolific thread starters tend towards being conspiracy types. If few random threads are being started, then it becomes dominated by breaking news events (usually political in nature) or "here's a random article I copy and pasted from a right wing blog, except I offer no comment with it and I'll get pissy if anyone does anything other than unquestioningly buy into it completely."
One of the best threads I ever saw on a forum was a poll - "Do you stand up to wipe, or not?" and it turns out that there were two tribes pretty much split right down the middle, all sorts of unlikely alliances, and neither tribe had any idea that the other even existed.
Another random one was "Prime for Prime - Anna Kournakova vs Gina Carano" and after all sorts of picture galleries and arguments about Photoshop and who looks like they fuck better and exciting changes in lead and momentum, the poll was eventually called at 100 votes, with the score standing at 51-49.
Or, if nobody makes random threads, then it's gonna be breaking news, the same 4-5 longstanding threads, and a few more Covid conspiracy/tyranny threads. And not much but, unfortunately.

That is just how he is from what I can tell.
