A bit silly the White Walkers were scared of the water when the gang of good guys were on the island... but not at all scared when they had to swim down to the bottom of that Lake to put those giant chains( that came from who-knows-where) on the dragon.
Wait a minute fellas..y'all don't do water, remember six minutes ago when hundreds of you were just standing on the edge of the ice..not getting in the water to kill the 6 guys?

I had the same thought, BUT......

Can corpses swim? I mean, many of them are just skeletons, and there's no way they'd be able to tread water with so many holes in them. Had they went into the water to go get the guys on the island, how would they swim up to get to the surface? With the chain, they drop the chain in, go attach it and then they can climb the chain up to the surface. I'm not sure the showrunners were thinking like this but I think it does work to half-assed explain that issue.
