Irma went 5 to 3 and is back to 4.
Category only describes the wind speeds.

Hurricane Ike is a good example of the deception of focusing on just wind speed.

Hurricane Ike - Wikipedia

It was down to category 3 on its way to texas, but it was enormous and the storm surge side hit just right for MASSIVE flash flooding.

Florida might be bad or this could be a catastrophic hit. Florida is an endless construction zone from Miami damn near to Jacksonville. And a lot of that has happened after Wilma, so who knows what things will look like.
This post loops back to th3 micro vs macro view of the force that u helped me realize yesterday. Being pushed my wind or hit by debri, being a micro view. And moving the ocean as a whole (receding and raising water levels) as rhe macro view

I had never separated storm size from the number. Good call

I didnt realize that hurricanes spin counter clockwise. So typhoons spin clockwise?

And more importantly, tje the water levels are sinking on the west coast and rising on tje east?

My parents and brother, wife and kids all rolled out last night at 5:00 pm as they live in tampa.......headed to Alabama and all safe for now.
My dad is not the type to want to leave the house during a storm but someone or something finally convinced him....

my girl kept asking last night and I acted like I knew but I keep getting curious: will these reporters stay right there in the middle of the storms and winds? are they the only ones out?

so glad I dropped out of journalism school.

I think they eventually retreat to a safe hotel. Last year our local news kept reporting from the hotel.

Do birds know to fly away ahead of time? What avout the squirrels? :(
Birds typically fly away. Squirrels stay. The ones with nests inside trees are typically ok, while the ones without have to find a strong tree and gold on for dear life.

In neither of the other two hurricanes I exoerienced do I remember seeing squirrel carcasses on the ground, so I'm sure evolution has given them a strategy to deal with hurricanes.

Northern hemisphere hurricanes spin counter clockwise.

Southern hemisphere hurricanes spin clockwise.

Typhoons, hurricanes, and tropical cyclones are all the same thing, the name just changes depending on the region. Typhoons are in the northern hemisphere, so they spin counter clockwise just like Atlantic hurricanes.
