So, yes.

We tip based on excellence of service as prior established, or to encourage same.

We understand that low wage jobs are greatly supplemented by tips, and many people work for them.

I'm sure your minimum wage is much higher.

Another melon to curve your noodle.

Tips are normally shared with the entire team not the individual who got the tip.
Frequently the case here, depending on the service. Tip jars in a sandwich shop, which is standard, and totally voluntary; they're not bringing food to your table and waiting on the customer.

But I've worked in restaurants, and have seen a waitress burst into tears after working like a dog for a demanding twelve top for three hours on a game night and getting stiffed.

If the person waiting on your table was deserving, leave them a fucking tip.

why do you assume the minimum wage?

most developed countries that have a strong union for unskilled labor have no need for minimum wages.

even places like India, the housecleaners are run like a local. Fuck with one housecleaner, you're not getting your house cleaned.
Ever.

I naturally figure that someone waiting tables is barely getting by.
If tipping isn't customary, that must mean the wage is enough to make up for no tips. If it isn't, then wait staff probably resent working like a dog and getting the same tipout as someone who forgot orders and was impossible to find when your table needs something.

Anyways, Google says this for whatever it's worth.

"At restaurants in the UK a tip of around 10% is expected if you order at your table. A 'service charge' or 'optional charge' may be included so check your bill. ... If it doesn't, you can always ask for the charge to be removed, and tip the waiter/waitress directly. If you receive bad service, don't tip."

entry-level is entry-level.

but you can make a living working as wait-staff. For a lot of staff, the flexible hours is a benefit, and it allows them to pursue passion projects or improve their skills through education.

If it's not worth the money, I can put in my own order and grab it from under the heat lamp

That could be argued both ways.

If the wait staff burst into tears when they don't get some supposedly "voluntary" tip from the customer, perhaps their employer should pay them a decent wage to begin with? Perhaps US restaurants think they can get away with paying atrociously low wages because of the strong tipping culture that exists there?

The law in a lot of places in the US is that they can be paid less than minimum wage if they receive enough tips to make up for it.

Staff get understandably upset when cheap people cheap out on them.
Throw down an extra dollar ffs.
It won't mean anything to you but it could make a difference in their meager existence.
The other route is that staff has no incentive to work any harder than the laziest hire.

I work my ass off on Saturday nights. I do 10x as much as I do on a Tuesday night. I don't expect to be paid more on Saturdays because I took more calls and dispatched more cars. I get paid for doing my shift at work, it doesn't matter how busy it is. If I'm lazy or incompetent, I'll be fired and replaced by someone who isn't lazy and incompetent.

Why should Waitress A who is kinda ditsy get paid way more than Waitress B who is very efficient, just because Waitress A is a blonde smokeshow and Waitress B is obese with bad skin?

??
