I seen to remember the broadcasters discussing it during the event, saying the family was disgraced by this and that Renzo was told in no uncertain terms that that was not the Gracie way.
But I'm old and smoke a lot of weed, so my memory may be questionable.
I think that guy deserved it. He was prank calling Renzo during the night leading up to the fight.

I asked Renzo about this at the UFC expo. Before I could finish the question he replied "AHHHH he's an asshole! Lol!" with a big gap toothed smile.
I’ve also spoke to him about it. He said the same thing, added that the guy was charged with assault for hitting a flight stewardess the next day. He said he had zero regrets for doing the stomp and if he knew the guy was going to hit a woman the next day, he’d have broke his arms.
After seeing the whole thing it looks stupid, but really rather innocent.
