I like the idea of 16. I dont yesterday is a true reflection of how exciting and competitive the College Football Playoff will be in the future.
Back around 10 years ago fanboy and I had a conversation about what the best format would be. Most went to 8 fanboy included. I went with 12. Top 4 getting byes made sense to me. Well the powers that be fucked it all up and like I said they're not going backwards. Theres way too much money to be made. So 16 it is. Ole Miss, USC and Bama would've made some interesting games. Imagine Penn States reaction to having to welcome Ole Miss to happy valley. They would've been pissed.

Correction... This was probably 12ish years ago. Right around the time the playoffs was a real possibility.

And too add home field advantage was huge yesterday. Teams will want to be in the top 8 which will make the end of the year games extremely tense and if the top 4 get 2 home games it increases the end of the year drama even more.

They have been doing a 16 team playoff in the lower divisions for a long time and the early games are never good.

Potential, sure
But Penn State is already at 75% to beat Boise St, the line I saw was -9.5

Texas is -13.5 over Arizona St

On the other hand the other two a basically pick 'em games. I saw tOSU by -1.5 and UGA by the same
Yeah, personally I don’t care about the line. When I watch Texas and Penn State I see two flawed teams that could fall flat on their face any given week.

Hoping we finally get a round of good games.

You can continue to bang on about the playoffs all you want but the reality is the depth in college football isn't there and never will be for competitive games outside of a handful. You know this so I'm not sure what we're debating.
You must hate all other sports. It's fascinating to see you continue to yell at clouds about the ONE sport (only division 1 cfb) that didnt have a legit playoff.

Of course there's only been a handful of teams capable of making it. That's what happens when the same teams continue to o go. The rich get richer. Times are changing.

Blowouts happened in the 4 team too so let's just go back to the BCS model. That's the most American thing I can think of. You're not getting your way here. It's over. Buckle up and enjoy games that matter no matter what the final score is.

And how dare you contradict the Pirate...

:p

There is absolutely no chance they move back to prior models, there’s too much money involved.

Inevitably we’ll see additional expansion, with the current bowl system wiped clean unless they can come up with significant incentives for schools to participate.

At this juncture they need to work on tweaking the playoff structure to more accurately reflect strength of resumes. Unlike the NFL, CFB playoff participants are not all playing on a level field with equal strength of competition. There needs to be a heavy metric in place for schools from weaker conferences getting byes and shit.

Btw you'd love this and THIS is the problem imo. You want to keep "the club" small. When it comes to sports I can't believe that's the choice you continue to make. It's weird.
I'm not debating keeping the circle small I'm commenting regarding talking yourself into these games will get better moving forward. They won't. Even the semi's only had a handful of good games.

Which is like the women’s college basketball tournament. Games are rarely competitive until the Elite 8.

More than likely heading for 50 to 60 schools forming their own league with rules put in place for all. The mini NFL. Has a nice ring.

Not saying I love the direction this is heading but we're here. NIL changed everything. Time for some to wake up.

I think this would be extremely difficult to pull off, with congress potentially stepping in forming policy in an attempt to create balance. So many schools would be fucked under this structure it would become a situation where new laws are created to stop the hemorrhaging of cash.

See that's BS though. You don't know that. With more exposure teams will recruit better. Kids will want to play for other teams than the traditional powers.

Are you saying that there's no way texass loses to Arizona St? No way? You can't say that. Boise St beating Penn State? You can't tell me that. Who is did Boise lose to? Away at that and by how much? To a team you'd swear should be one of two or four. Wake up.

The rulings that have come down lately makes me think they won't be able to do anything about it. Rules that we all believed for a long time were fair and just have been thrown out left and right. Nothing will surprise me now.

The nature of underdogs and Cinderella stories is infrequent success. Doesn’t matter though, that’s the norm for almost every sport in existence.

They just need to restructure so weaker teams are playing each other early.

Yeah but those rulings are based on existing law. I think moving forward laws could potentially be changed through congressional action.

Maybe but I doubt that'll happen. I honestly want Congress as far away from this thing as possible. We think it's fucked now.. Hide and watch.

All it really takes is one congressman who’s an alum of some school getting fucked to step up and form a committee. At that point the ball rolls down hill.

We’ll see though, it’s completely out of control now, and since CFB can’t seem to get their shit together enough to create a cohesive system, anything is possible.

I think there are two types of comments on this: wishing it was different (ideas, complaining, whatever) and then what's realistic to happen. They shouldn't be confused, it's two different conversations

I'm just hoping the next round of games are more entertaining. Crazy that zero of the first four were watchable unless you are a fan of the winning team.

Ohio State went from losing at home to an utterly average Michigan team, to tearing Tennessee apart in a matter of weeks.

CFB teams are schizo.

Talking about the good old days like they were the best is just lame imo. Acting as if some of these games couldn't go in a different direction is just lazy. Are the odds stacked against some? Sure but that doesn't tell the whole story.

I agree though hopefully they'll be more interesting. Hopefully the powers that be at least fix the seeding nonsense next year.

No one wants congress involved I agree but forming a league with 50 to 60 teams is the only way forward. There have been a handful of posts on private equity firms attempting to buy a majority stake in teams. That's the last thing we want and I would much prefer congress setting concrete legislation over that. I think if private equity starting buying teams we would all say adios to college football eventually.

I'm genuinely curious if the SEC & B10 did form their own league how legal is it for them to set their own concrete rule set?

If we're being objectively honest Day lost that Michigan game due to his own ego. He kept hearing Michigan and the talking heads yapping about the team that runs for the most yards wins. He basically played right into Michigans hands and didn't take advantage of his superior offensive weapons.

Congress getting involved would mean more regulation. There’s a perception right now that college football operates under almost no regulation, which will result in smaller schools that depend on sports revenue being ousted.

It’s a multi-billion dollar business. Whether people want government involved or not, it will absolutely happen if these greedy fucks continue to treat the game like their own personal ATM.
