We're similar humans. Power is the key word in your post, specifically lust for it. Arrogance implies a benevolence in their actions, which in reality only exists as a psychological tool to distract troops and civilians, from the actual outcomes of their actions.

Living where they have lived their entire lives, I'm guessing they are likely lacking an understanding of what the rest of the world is like. If a smuggler told them it was an easy life - why wouldn't they believe it? You might say it's illogical - and it is - but the logical thoughts of people living in a civilized world are born from personal experiences. It's nothing these migrants would have much - if any - knowledge of.
Leaving their family in a dangerous environment is an interesting subject. To us, they live in an area that is insanely violent, but it's all they have ever known. Sure, they've been told that Europe offered better opportunity and a safer place to live, but I'm sure there was still some level of doubt. It's the whole "devil you know vs the devil you don't" scenario. I find it hard to fathom leaving a loved one in that mess while I rolled the dice and tried to find a better place to live, but their reality isn't my reality.
The whole thing is crazy.

If you move to the netherlands and you get your "green card", you can file papers so that your wife and kids can come over legally.
The only problem is they won't get that "greencard", they get an asylum status and it takes a shitload of time, there are people here that are waiting for over 10 years to get an official status, some have kids who are born and raised here and who don't know shit about there parents country, and they get send back if the status is not granted, an asylum seeker is not allowed to work by the way.
So they get told by the smugglers go to europe you'll get a bigass house a moneytree in you backyard a good paying job and you can bring you family there as soon as you are settled.
