African country with longstanding conflict with neighboring Ethiopia. Recent thawing of relations but flared up again due to water fights. Eritrea is particularly important due to its location in the Horn of Africa with a long coastline. Currently Djibouti as one of the only places in the area that's stable leases a ton of its land to a dozen different militaries across the world to project power across a critical strait.
Eritrea is terribly poor, but if stabilized or friendly to you could represent an alternative strategic position to Djibouti, which is what every western power is using.
On its own it's not much, but it's an important real estate alternative depending on who you are.
